...is my freaking shirt making me look fat? Excuse me, I have to go find a full length mirror.
BRITPOPBABY READS JAKE'S GQ INTERVIEW AND IS MOSTLY CONFUSED.
1. The word 'milquetoast' is used.
2. Jake likes to watch pigs being slaughtered.
3. Interviewer and Jake talk about ellipsies. britpopbaby shudders as the ghost of James Joyce taps her on the shoulder and says, 'Remember me?'
4. Robert Downey Jnr describes Jake as '...wet, dark and wild'. There is no explanation of this comment. Unfortunately.
5. Interviewer accidentally insults Jake. jake responds by doing a faux English accent and then a monkey impression.
6. Interviewer keeps mentioning 'leathery woman'. Is she Jake? No. So do we care? No.
7. Jake demands a pug to wipe his chicken wing covered hands on, which leads beautifully into how he has a Boo.
8. Caddyshack? Kill me. Kill me now.
9. When interviewer says, 'Wow, you're a traditonally guy.' Jake replies, 'Not really...but, yeah.'
10. My new favourite Jake quote: 'Brutha, the mountain is many things'.
11. They have a fake Shakepeare's Globe Theatre in LA. Sacrilegious.
12. Jake and interviewer attempt to break in to fake Globe Theatre. Again, no explanation.
13. Jake has a bitchin' car...but says he's going to buy two hybrids. Why does one person need two cars?
14. Jake screams at his GPS.
15. Jake keeps mucho sporting equipment in his trunk. You never know when you might need a squash raquet.

Jake, you stud you!!
I love the one of him leaning back against the window/wall......sexy, beautiful man!!
God damn he looks sexy!!! Love the sultry look!
I wish the text could go away... Other than that :p
**WHEN** is someone going to post the text of the interview?? It's killing me waiting to read it!!
big year for Jake and for us.
britpop, that was exactly what i was thinking! i mean, after i got past the smoldering gaze of the sex, i was like, wait, is this GQ's try at being ironic, cuz i don't think jake's tucked in white shirt makes him look thinner... (ducks)
it's still an awesome spread. can't wait to read the article :).
Oh my GOD he looks hot...
Is it me, or have they made his eyes brown?
That cover shot makes him look older. Seriously hot, but older. Does he even realize how he looks???? Does he even realize the effect this is having on me????
Awww, shit, Jake!!! And he's working that "Do me" thing. Yeah.
I just love how Jake is everywhere now! Makes me feel Zodiac's getting close.
God knows why in the UK we get Beyonce on GQ instead. Sucks.
I noticed that his eyes look brown too. I don't know what's up with that really.
Shirts are ALWAYS tucked in for GQ covers. Supposely it makes you look thinner and fit.
I don't know why, but seeing him in a tucked in white shirt and grey dress slacks....reminds me of a young Warren Beatty...Splendor in the Grass Warren Beatty. Except Jake is MUCH hotter.
Good God....Words fail me. He is...just breathtakingly sexy and gorgeous.
How many times and how many ways can someone say how beautiful this man is? A gazillion.
I was thinking he is channeling Montgomery Clift again...woofers!
Is it me, or have they made his eyes brown?
Yes I think they have...
they must've done something weird with the lighting for that pic-- his eyes don't look straight up brown but more like this weird silvery greenish gray to me... very odd. but still hot.
^^In the other pics from that spread, his eyes look really brown.
^^^ Why would they do such a thing!! :(
But seriously. Does anyone have the article? I'm dying to read it...
Yes, the pictures are very drool-worthy but what I am really looking forward to is hopefully an interesting interview/article that tells us something new!
I don't want to read it online, I want to read it when I have the actual magazine in my hands. Don't know why, but I do.
Is it out in our local stores Brits! I must check tomorrow!
The scan is up on IHJ!
http://iheartjake.suddenlaunch.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=gyllenhaalics&num=1169070110&start=60
YAAAAAAAAY!!! Man, it'll be like £4 - how can I afford that on my measley JW salary! I'll steal it...
cina said: "I don't want to read it online, I want to read it when I have the actual magazine in my hands. Don't know why, but I do."
Same here, cina...want to read it with it in my hands. Think it's because it's sorta like holding Jake while we're reading? A psychological thing, maybe? Hmmmm...
Dude, I'm taking out of petty cash!
Well, THAT was only about the cutest damned interview I've ever read. I think the interviewer was in love with him a little bit.
So much for me staying away from reading it online... I DEVOURED it!! That was one damn good interview! I'm all giddy now. Whooowheee! :p
I'm still getting that magazine though. Yessurrey!
I want to lounge in his Mercedes too. *sigh*
OMFG!! He's just so unbelievably sexy and gorgeous that I might just pass out and die, right here and right now...
I didn't actually notice the weird color of his eyes at first, I think I was too dizzy from just seeing the pics. Anyways, I think it's a lighting thing, like smurfette said, because in the close-up pic they're not brown, rather dark blue-ish. Well, in any case, they're eyes to die for.. *thud*
Oooh, I can't WAIT to get my hands on that magazine! I want to wait, too, to read the interview until then. Hee, that'll be a first, buying a Men fashion magazine! :)
That was one damn good interview! I'm all giddy now.
Crap. How am I supposed to be able to wait to read it now?!
I LOVED that interview. He is quick and smart and funny and he knows the business he is in.
is the interview part on the internet to read? or did all you guys buy the mag and read it? we don't have it over here
I have found the first thing I truly dislike about Jake, the indifference in which he talks about going to see a pig being slaughtered. I am not expecting him to talk about animal rights or vegetarianism, but the indifferent way he talks about it, as it is something amusing, bothers me. I found this comment weird coming from the mouth of someone that seems so sensitive and with the tendency to talk about minorities, political rights and freedom. I can’t believe someone with Buddhist beliefs could enjoy something that cause suffering and is the opposite of compassion. Very annoying!!
I think the way he talked about the pig was infact very healthy. He isn't being a hypocrite like so many of us meat-eaters. I think if you are willing to eat the meat it's not unreasonable to be willing to face the realities of where the meat comes from. I liked the way Gordon Ramsay tried to instill that in his kids on his TV show....I am one of those hypocrites, I like to eat the bacon but I couldn't face watching the pig being slaughtered.
Yes, the pig comment seemed very odd from him. I read it a few times over to check he wasn't being sarcastic or ironic but I don't think he was.
Just when I didn't think I could find anything else to love about this guy he gave us SNL and now some fab quotes in this interview....
“The most interesting movies are those when, even though you know the outcome, you still fully believe there’ll be another outcome”
“Oh, if you knew my taste in movies, you’d hate me”
I'm with you muffin, on the pig slaughter comment.
Okay, now I'm definitely off to read. I'm not sure I'm liking what I'm reading here, pig slaughter comments? Uh-oh.
Where is this interview??
at IHJ
Waaah! I want to read this interview!!!
:::must search the ends of the earth for this magazine...or just go to local bookstore:::
Only on page two of the article, but...he's a MORNING person??? I'm crushed.
God, Brit - before I read the article, I thought you were using your clever imaginination to make all that stuff up.
But EVERY WORD IS TRUE!
That boy is amazing. Oh, I'm so overjoyed to finally get to read something about him. This road to the premiere of Zodiac is going to be FUN!
^^ Not a morning person myself but I think it was pretty much a given that he would be a morning person. He doesn't seem to be into the nightlife in Hollywood in the same way as a lot of the young 'uns are ....and he did look mighty tired at the GGs.....
I loved the bit about the 3 hours of biking or one hour of running on an average day. I am a couch potato myself but I like to think of Jake being fit and healthy.
its really bothering me that his eyes are a different colour. i mean they might as well put a black smudge over his face cause they are changing one of his best features (i mean its all a best feature, but omg his eyes!)
its really disturbing me!!! Why would they do that?!?!?!
Am I the only person who doesn't think his eyes look brown?
Blue eyes react dramatically to light, sometimes looking grey, and darkening to denim blue at times. I think the lighting in this picture is just bring out greenish tones in Jakes....I have hazel eys and depending on the time of day ad the lighting my eyes can change from green to gold to brown.
"And sometimes what I actually love to do is go to a farm and get fresh milk or watch a pig get slaughtered"
The interviewer should have asked or commented on this statement. I agree with Muffin: "I think if you are willing to eat the meat it's not unreasonable to be willing to face the realities of where the meat comes from." But Jake uses the term "love" and IMO that was very awkward.
On a lighter note:
Robert D.jr. explains Jakes as "wet, dark and wild". I love "dark" and "wild" but can someone please explain "wet"??
And his wonderful blue eyes are looking brown in those pictures.....
Oh yeah...have I mentioned to you all lately what a "caring, smart, mindful woman" I am???
:::sigh:::
On a side note, to me, his eyes look grey in the cover shot, but they do look brown in the one where he's leaning back against the rock wall/fireplace thingy...
i hate to gush, but how can i not? that interview, that man! i loved the wit and humor jake injected throughout the interview in answering the various questions. oh, and i think i'm in the minority, but from the tone of the rest of the article, i wouldn't be surprised if jake was being half serious, half, like, intentionally provocative when referring to the pig slaughter. he could have peppered that statement with tone, or a look, to acknowledge how bizarre an experience it was to witness such a thing.
that said, i agree with muffin that as a meat eater, he's at least not being hypocritical.
i also think it's funny that there are two major fan outcries from the article: eye color! pig slaughter!
i thought there were some other interesting takeaways-- like on doing a romantic comedy: "Nah, you've kissed a girl on film. I saw you. I saw Bubble Boy."/ "And there were times when I enjoyed it." such a tease :). or the fact that he bites his nails! i'm weird, but thankfully, apparently, so is jake!
Brit, the Caddyshack thing is definitely a joke. "He pauses to savor the joke" immediately follows him saying he likes that movie, so I'm pretty sure he wasn't serious.
I'm dying for him to do a romantic comedy! I do believe I would swoon...
I wanna play Paparazzi Bingo again... please?
I'm pretty sure the two cars thing is a joke, too. It just sounds like one, based on the fact that he was trying to (jokingly) defend his Mercedes.
where exactly on IHJ is the interview? i thought it would be under magazine scans but i can't find it! whats the link?
I intend to actually buy the magazine and read it comfortably and at my leisure tomorrow. But I did make it through half the article in the IHJ scan...it will blind you!...and actually, I couldn't help but feel that the person doing the interview was a real jerk. I don't mean they aren't a nice person and they are probably kind to puppies and small children, but, the interview was labored, not easy and flowing. I think Jake came off as difficult it bits of it. I think Jake is impatient of banlity and he likes being intellectually stimulated and frankly, with these interviews, more often than not, he could phone it in. The thing is, with GQ, Vanity Fair, rolling Stone, and a few other really top tier magazines, they expect to spend time with the subject. I also think the interviewer knew next to nothing about Jake before the interview but did read up on him ahead of time so he could "ask good questions." (Sigh.) I wish they'd let me interview him.
It's on the message board part of the site under "Gyllenhaalics"
wow, talk about different views: anon 11:34; I thought the interview was great! I was pleasantly suprised at how it alternated between comic/effusive and sarcastic on jake's part.
I guess irony really is missing in print.
I loved it. I hope its the same issue in the UK, I'm definetly getting this one
and he sympathises with the interviewer for being zodiacized
Interesting
He truely is the sexiest man alive. Gosh he perfect.
People magazine wake up and put him on the cover of your sexiest man issue.
I can't wait to get my copy.
Okay, after reading all the comments my curiosity got the better of me and I caved...
Interesting interview, very interesting. I think I saw a refreshingly "human" side of Jake. As a devoted fan I have a tendency to idolize him and think of him as being perfect with no faults or idiosyncrasies.
The pig comment did bother me, too, in the casual way he tossed it off in the conversation. He probably didn't really think about how it would sound, but I bet he's gonna take some flack for that remark.
All in all, a very interesting and enlightening interview. Different. And the way he described the interviewer being "Zodiacked"....hmmmm, intriguing. Smoking hot pics, though. And I loved his description of his mother's baking when she's writing!
haven't bought the magazine yet..... that's my special treat for tomorrow night when I get home from dinner with friends.
however, I have seen the photos..... and the pic of him in the light colored suit, lounging in the doorway with his shades on, right foot endearingly tucked behind the left one, looking off to his right, well..... there are not enough words in the English language to describe what this photo does to me.
my first impression (when my brain came back on line) was...... Steve McQueen. Jake totally exudes that same so cool/so hot/so sexy vibe that Mr. McQueen patented..... and it looks really good on Jake.
it will be a long time before I see a more OMG! picture of Jake. The Sex indeed!
Oh, and Smurfette and Kokodee, I think you guys are spot on when Smurfette said she thought he might have been intentionally provocative, and Kokodee when she? he? said that irony doesn't translate in print.
Also, in looking at Jake's pics I always thought he was a nail biter. Ah-HAH!!! Cuz it takes one to know one...
Hate the slaughter reference, but Tom Stoppard is one of my favourite playwrights so I'm very impressed Jake is into him.
Jake is a seriously intelligent guy. And I think, like a lot of college drop outs in a family that seems to prize education, he has made it his business to be self-taught. As he said, he understands the language of film, the art form he was born into. He definitely seems like a collaborator, not a loner. I suspect there were many dinner table conversations at the Gyllenhaal house (and probably still are)filled with the kinds of artistic, intellectual, and political discussions that might make some people feel as if they were attending a grad school seminar. Jake obviously has a sense of humor, he's very grounded and he's brilliant. Add to that his kindness and warmth and the physical package they come in and ...shit!
You know, these interviews do get edited. I bet Jake was rapsodizing about food and cooking, and about going to the farm, and a friend bought a pig and had it slaughtered.I know of true foodies who are very much into the entire process, where and how food is grown, produced, etc. whether it's fresh veggies and fruit, dairy such as milk and cheese, or meat fish and poultry. And if you have an avid interest, and would like to open your own restaurant one day, farms, and farmers' markets would definitely intrigue you. I'm thinking of Chez Panisse in San Francisco and how she got started.
Hey, Ennis and Jack killed an elk and ate it. Between shooting and eating, guess what happened to the elk?
Yep, folks.
The pig comment did bother me, too, in the casual way he tossed it off in the conversation. He probably didn't really think about how it would sound, but I bet he's gonna take some flack for that remark."
Oh yeah. Definitely. I bet the PETA followers are going to get very pissed. Hopefully this will fall below their radar. Those folks are VERY fanatical.
I'm sorry you feel that way gummy, but I really don't think he meant it the way it sounds you know? He's a guy who likes to learn and to experience stuff, and to him it was one of those things. I'm 100% sure he doesn't LOVE watching an animal die, but he "loved" having had the experience, if you know what I'm mean? He doesn't shy away from the uncomfortable stuff surrounding meat becoming food, and as a meat-eater and a passionate cook, it's a healthy attitude. I do respect your reaction and your opinion, I really do. But I think it's also a misunderstanding. :)
I presume Jake must've never seen Babe.
I love the interview. He´s smart and sacarstic, and so Jake.
The interviewer really seemed to like him.
Willow, seriously? Ha, I loved that movie when I was a lot younger.
I think I saw a refreshingly "human" side of Jake. As a devoted fan I have a tendency to idolize him and think of him as being perfect with no faults or idiosyncrasies.
it's not good to idolize
I don't want to be too serious but sometimes I have impression that people idolize Jake too much
I presume Jake must've never seen Babe.
LOL
Just finished the article. Very well done. but i still dont know what to make of it. Im jealous that the writer spent so much time with him! And sat in his car! OMG, i might go into journalism!
I always suspected, and now i know for sure that Jake is totally way too smart for me! Hes just so intellegent! Hes amazing!
I would bet all my savings that Jake didnt say the pig comment the way it was writen. Remember guys this has been written by someone else and edited by someone else again and probably someone else again. It didnt mesh with the rest of the article, i dont think it 'sounded' like the rest of the article and i find it VERY hard to beleive he said it the way it made out. Like Cina said, he loved the experience. The pics are great, but i still cant get over the eyes dammit!
Overall a really interesting fun interview. The pig comment bothers me though, the comment just seemed so casual. After reading the comment about Caddyshack, I realized he was joking! And whats this: he wanted to be a Basketball player and ended up an actor!? I'm glad he bacame the latter.
you mean the part about '...wet, dark and wild' is true too? i just have to read it.
and jake, pig slaughter???!!! yewwww. almost as bad as hearing that you're a morning person.
I've read it now too (couldn't wait any longer!). And yes, the pig comment bothers me some. I'm just hoping, considering the article was written and edited by someone else and the fact that things like sarcasm/irony/humor don't always shine through the written word, that it wasn't meant to come out the way it did. And I agree with s4m985, it didn't mesh with the rest of the article.
As far as the rest of it goes: really enjoyed reading it!! I laughed out loud several times, and I learned quite a few new things about him. Oh, and a morning person, huh? I wish I was...
6. Interviewer keeps mentioning 'leathery woman'. Is she Jake? No. So do we care? No.
LOL! Exactly.
why is he frowning in the cover pic? jake, smile like a good boy and show uncle kaydee your lovely dimples!
The pig comment is more like he wants to learn to experience some painful and tearing feelings. We all know how much he loves his dogs and he helped somebody's things out of the fire, people say he is a humanitarian. I think it's needless to fuss about the pig comment. That comment doesn't mean Jake is a cold-blooded person at all!
^^Exactly my opinion.
I don't know how reliable this site is, but they claim to have info about a SNL skit that didn't make it.
http://www.jossip.com/gossip/jake-gyllenhaal/the-jake-gyllenhaal-spandex-skit-that-never-was-20070116.php
Well, for what it's worth, I still love him, am still a fan, still think he's the hottest man in the universe.
I thought the interview was fantastic, I loved his wit and intelligence, and agree the pig thing was very likely taken out of context. Everyone knows Jake is an animal lover, humanitarian and all-around good guy. I too learned some new things about him (morning person???...dang!), and intend to scarf me up a copy of that mag this weekend!
jossip is not a very nice site. They lie and they are mean and snarky. I put them right in the gutter with dlisted and perezhilton, bottom feeders all!
I think too much is being made of this pig comment. First, the article HAD to be edited. Second, I'm sure, in the proper context, it didn't come off the way it reads to some of you. Third, how can you possibly know "how" jake said something. What seems an off-hand comment could have been anything but. I think the notion that he may have been 'trippin' about being a foodie is the most plausible theory I've read here.
In regard to the pig uproar.
Read one of the best American books of the year, Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemna on our industrial food system and the alternatives. One alternative is farms that grow, raise and slaughter an ecologically sustainable range of plants and animals. Regulations usually favor huge corporate slaugther houses. Apparently, Jake is not a vegetarian, but having animals raised and killed outside the industrialized system is a huge and important step.
Ahh, so many visions of blissful things to do with Jake--visitng farms and eating are near the top.
"I think it's needless to fuss about the pig comment."
Agreed - and I am more surprised and disappointed how easy some people suddenly are judging over Jake.
Concerning the "lost" SNL skit- I had expected something about biking/spandex/Lance Armstrong and was surprised that they only did something about biking in that harmless "Frank O`Connor" skit. If Jake really refused to do the mentioned skit, it was probably unfunny & lame.
Jake is a road rager - I knew it!
Yelling at his GPS...I'd love to see that..its just funny in general whomever it is.
Caddyshack - KILL ME TOO! Man - maybe I should go buy the mag because I'm not exactly sure what I'm being killed over.
Fake accents ... only in bed.
i'm with carla-- the pig comment is getting way overblown, and i'm a little disappointed by that. i eat pork, so even though i'm not brave enough to watch a pig get slaughtered, i'm not about to judge those who are. thanks to the anon who brought up the elk in bbm, and the anon who brought up the omnivore dilemma--i've heard of that book too. interesting counter-points.
and lastly, jake is such a sarcastic person in interviews, that things easily get lost in print-- for example if you don't read carefully, you may have thought the caddyshack comment, or the basketball aspirations were serious, but if you read into the tone, they clearly aren't.
ok, i'll drop it now.
Perhaps it's a generational thing, but I am afraid that I feel less reverent toward animals than many do, and so this reported comment by Jake didn't bother me at all. (But I haven't picked up the magazine yet to read the context.) I've only read excerpts from the Pollan article in NY Times Magazine, but it was indeed very interesting. Also, maybe my attitude has something to do with my rural upbringing, which included seeing veal calves lying within their little hutches every day from the window of my school bus and having friends who were in 4-H & raised animals for competition, which were later slaughtered. (They'd be sort of akin to Jack & Ennis in "Brokeback Mountain" -- you know those guys weren't PETA members.) I'd rather hear Jake express himself without inhibition than unthinkingly mouth the usual pieties of our time.
"Look, the most important job for a man is to find the right woman." WTF??? Sounds like Jake is starting to take himself seriously - scary.
I'd rather hear Jake express himself without inhibition than unthinkingly mouth the usual pieties of our time.
i agree completely! well put, nice anonymous, as always :).
I agree that he looks incredible, gorgeous, sexy, hot, etc. in the photos. I found the pig slaughtering comment odd as well. . .not that I find pig slaughtering completely intolerable because I'm not a vegetarian so I realize they are going to be slaughtered for consumption, but to admit you actually enjoy watching it?????
Although people describe Jake as being thoughtful and introspective, it seems as if he talks without thinking sometimes. I have read other things he said where I thought "huh???" So maybe this is a case of just not thinking. . .or maybe he meant something else entirely, like he's a down-to-earth normal person who can handle such things, and not a celebrity in his ivory tower. And maybe I'm just trying to defend/understand him making such a strange comment. I'm surprised the interviewer didn't ask him to clarify it.
"Look, the most important job for a man is to find the right woman." WTF??? Sounds like Jake is starting to take himself seriously - scary.
Wasn't he saying that the most important job for a father is to find the right woman to mother his children?
That comment doesn't mean Jake is a cold-blooded person at all!
Who said he was?! I, for one, just found the comment a bit odd, and that's it. Still love Jake to pieces, and I think of him as such a genuine, thoughtful, and caring person. Okay, enough of that. :)
Hey, I've never seen "Willow"! I so want to now!!
Two trips to Barnes & Noble and two trips to Borders this week and still no February GQ Magazine.
When the heck is it due out one the store shelves?
It's driving me crazy!!!
If someone think his pig comment indicates that he is a sadism, and he sees the pig got slaughtered is just want to be pleased,I must say that's not a clever idea, how can someone who adopt a vagabond doggie can get fun from seeing animal got slaughter? It's illogical! Life is so complicated, and there are a lot of suffering in our life, sometimes we must face it.it's stupid to think that someone loves to face some brutal things means that person is hardhearted, sometimes, those kind of person usually are thinker.
Finally got my copy of GQ at a Hudson News shop at the airport. I was absurdly delighted to see the issue sitting atop a nice thick stack of a half-dozen Jakes. (I wish there were indeed that many -- one for everyone who wants one.) Of course, I got a splotch of olive oil right on the page while I was reading, so now I'll have to buy another copy to save.
Jake reminds me of a mockingbird, with the way he drops so naturally into all those voices & attitudes while spending time with the interviewer. I enjoy hearing him make fun of himself & the whole interview process. This just confirms the side of him we saw during Saturday Night Live.
OH.MY.FREAKING.GOD.
Those are the hottest square santimetres in the history of paper/the hottest bytes of information in the whole INet. And you, Jake, are killing erotic.
I no longer hold him in high regard as I once did. To see such a thing...well I won't go into detail here. If the remark was taken out of context, then perhaps Jake will address that. Not that he needs to prove anything to anyone. As for PETA, they have foot-in-mouth disease. I supported them for about 5 minutes, until I came to realization that they have no idea what they're doing, but thats for another discussion.
" I'm not in PETA, but the pig comment seriously disappointed me. I didn't expect that degree of indifferance from Jake, and I didn't expect him to be the kind of person who can stand to watch suffering (and like it!). I can't say I'm even a fan anymore. Unless Jake comes out to say that was a joke or a serious misquote, I think I'm out, folks."
I feel the same. I'm very disappointed in Jake; he's definitely not the sensitive guy I thought he was. I don't really care if it was intended as a joke either, it wasn't funny. I think he was serious though. What a sick, twisted thing to say.
The pig comment definitely bothered me. Why, Jake? T_T
It will not really have effect, I feel like this.
