SOME SERIOUS JAKE DISSCUSSION

Okay, so not that serious but, and if you can believe this, Jake Watch has been accused of not concentrating enough on Jake as an actor and his career. Well, I'm sorry but it's taken me six years to get past Jake as the sex so I haven't been able to think about all the other strings he has to his bow. Now though, maybe I can look at the bigger picture so I thought we might all enjoy another survey and see what points arise.

1. Favourite Jake role and why?

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far?

3. What would you like to see him try next?

4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead?

5. Any mistakes made, IYHO?

6. If Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be? (whoops! how did that one get in there?)

1. Donnie Darko, because I love that movie beyond all reason and in a very weird way, I relate to that character.
Runner-up: Jack Twist, for being half of the hottest on-screen hook-up in movie history and for making me attracted to a cowboy for the first time in my life.

2. The BAFTA, a decent substitute for a much-deserved Oscar.

3. Jake as the evil villian. Delicious.

4. He strikes me as a writer. I'd guess he'd be either a best-selling novelist or screenwriter.

5. Mistakes? Jake? What? No. He's divine.

6. Rocky Road, 'cause it just seems so right...

1. Brokeback Mountain. It is where I discovered the beauty that is Jake. *sigh* Some how it had escaped me before. I think he showed what amazing depth he has as an actor and the kind of actor he will be as an adult.

2. Oscar nomination/Bafta win. I believe this will put him on the map and give him the respect that he deserves. I see him becoming one of the greatest actors of our generation. He should have won the Oscar. Those Brits have always been smarter than us, Americans. :)

3. Romantic Comedy. Where he plays the dork we all love. How adorable would he be in something like that?

4. College Professor in Religious Studies. I seem him as an academic of sorts.

5. Bubbleboy. Hahaha. That movie was seriously stupid. :)

6. Cheesecake. It's a bit cheezy (lol), unusual, rich, delicious, and goes great with almost any topping. Oh, and it just happens to be my favorite.

1. Favourite Jake role and why?
Jack Twist - because I think all the other were preparation for this (even though they were great too).

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far?
Jack Twist. His performance completely blew me away, I've never seen anything like it. I have to remind myself over and over again that he was only 23 when it was filmed. Amazing how such a young actor can be so mature in his interpretation of a character.

3. What would you like to see him try next?
Theatre in London...

4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead?
Well, considering his interests, he probably would have been a chef or a carpenter...

5. Any mistakes made, IYHO?
Can't think of any (haven't seen all his work yet).

6. If Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be? (whoops! how did that one get in there?)
CHOCOLATE!!!!!

Donnie Darko. Gawd, how I love that movie! He just...WAS, you know? I also loved him as Holden in The Good Girl...wonder why Jake plays the crazies so well. Hmmmmm.

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far? Brokeback Mountain. He was SO perfect as Jack, he disappeared. Geez, the talent on that man!

3. What would you like to see him try next? I think he has great comedic ability, I'd love to see him in a romantic comedy.

4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead? Something artistic, he has an artist's soul. Writing, directing, possibly furniture making? Hey....a well-made piece of furniture IS art!

5. Any mistakes made, IYHO? Not that I've seen so far, but I haven't seen all of his work, yet.

6. If Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be? (whoops! how did that one get in there?) As long as I can put it in a cone and lick it, baby...who cares? My favorite flavor is chocolate, tho.

Donnie Darko, after this role I fell in love with Jake. The character spoke to me and my darker side. And Jake really showed his talents off, and at such a young age too.

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far?
Brokeback Mountain. It showed the rest of the world what we already knew, how talented, versitale and charaismatic he is. (Plus the Oscar nomination)

3. What would you like to see him try next?
Whatever he wants, I love the type of filcks he picks. A little off bit, but oh so good.

4. 4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead?
Become a writer or a chief. He has a deep need to express himself creativtly and could do so in either profession.

5. Any mistakes made, IYHO?
Proof. Terrible movie, and Jake was the only highlight to the insainity.

Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be? (whoops! how did that one get in there?)
Any, as long as I get to be the one who enjoy it!

1. Donnie Darko. An incredible movie that yes, has plotholes but was such a brave move. I love the whole atmosphere of it and I couldn't take my eyes off Jake in that film.

2. I think getting the lead role in Jarhead. Sam Mendes must've had a whole lot of faith in him and boy, did it pay off! An amazing film that should have got more recognition.

3. I want to see him play the bad guy too. He kind of straddled (sorry) both the good and bad character in Darko but pure evil would be irresistable.

4. Before seeing Jarhead I don't think he would have had the anger to be a pro chef but now I think he could definately take it on!

5. TDAT! I know it's got an enviromental message and was a blockbuster summer movie but who thought seeing a load of ice and snow would be as exciting as seeing shit explode! Oh, quick, the ice is coming!

6. Chocolate mint chip - my favourite!

1. Favourite Jake role and why?
Jack Twist, because he's spot on...Jake disappears and Jack emerges. I just love when an actor can do that! He also does that quite well as Swoff in Jarhead.

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far?
Brokeback Mountain, of course. But, oh, the wonderful things he'll achieve in the future!

3. What would you like to see him try next?
I'm honestly not sure. Romantic comedy doesn't really seem his venue...drama, I guess, would be my preference.

4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead?
I think he'd be a chef, and a darn good one from what I've read.

5. Any mistakes made, IYHO?
I'd have to say The Day After Tomorrow. He was decent in it, but the movie was not all that wonderful.

6. If Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be? (whoops! how did that one get in there?)
Hmmmm....well, he's really a mixture, so I'd say one of those great concoctions you can get at Cold Stone (in the States).

Woah, I'm back, and look at this blog!. Britbaby, i'm proud of ya and your blog; exclusives and near jail sentences included. Keep up the work!
Ok, here we go...
Favourite Role
1. Holden Worther.
Why? If anyone was born to play Caulfield it was Jake. As JD Salinger has refused the rights to one of my favourite bools, this is the closest I can get to 'Catcher in the Rye' and I love jake and kiss his cheeks and other parts of his anatomy for doing that for me!

2. Biggest Achievement.
There are 2.
A. That BAFTA, and the general acclaim for Brokeback.
B. Establishing the cult phenomena that was Donnie Darko (i love the preface he writes in the book by Richard Kelly) and still being able to transcend that role in his career. (see A)
I seriously can't wait for Zodiac!

3. Next Role
I second the Evil Villan with a jakey twist of humour.

4.Instead of an actor...
He would have been a Carpenter, carving poetry on wood. (you can carve my wood anytime. *wink*)

5. Mistakes?
Does Kirsten count? Lol. See with me it would have been forever baby!
By now, we would have had the 2.5 to compete with Heath's proposed 6.

Ok, seriously I need to put in a good word for Bubble boy...Its one of my favourite comedies simply because it dares to poke fun at the stereotypes craeted by our society. *It's a parody mixed in an enigma*. Did I say that? Whoops my bad! So, it tanks in some places but how can you not enjoy jimmy, pootang and poonanny with bettlejuice thrown in!

6.
Jake as an Icecream...
Can come in all flavours baby and I'll be sure to love Icecream for the rest of my life!

I love surveys!!
1. Fave role has to be either Holden in The Good Girl as he is so damn good! Or Jack Twist cos he totally amazing and looks damn fine in a cowboy hat! Save a horse ride a cowboy and all that!

2. I'd say the BAFTA as it was totally deserved. I actually cheered and got all emotional when he won! I was watching it alone as well...

3. I've heard he was one of the last three up for Moulin Rouge so would love to se him do a musical. I reckon a man that can sing and dance is pretty sexy!

4. I think he'd make a good teacher as he's so sweet and sensitive. Or maybe a chef as I love food!

5. I could say The Day After Tomorrow but that film is a guilty pleasure of mine!

6. Ice cream...um couldn't we just eat some together! I reckon he'd be classic like vanilla or choc chip!

Anonymous said...

1. Jack Twist, because he completey commited to the role adn it's now my favorite movie, better than The Color Purple or Princess Bride. Yes, I have a strange mind.

2. Biggest achievement would be his ability to morph into whatever character he is inhabiting at the time.

3. I want him to be the villain in a well written popcorn movie where he can do some choreographed fighting OR a lot of smoldering looks over a desk in a dark suit.

OR

He could do a comedy. That boy is funny as hell.

4. A chef.

5. Hmmm... not yet. Even Highway had it's appeal and it was just terrible. Still the homoeroticism twinxt him and Jared and him and John C. McGinley was worth the price of the rental.

6. He would be butter pecan. Mmmm butter.

Anonymous said...

1. Donnie Darko
2. Brokeback Mountain. Bafta win and oscar nomination.
3. Extreme ironing.
4. Anything. He would be successful whatever he would do. Writer? Some artistic work..
5. Contract with NIKE (if true).
6. Rum & raisin!

Anonymous said...

I have no real clue as to why I picked butter pecan other than that's the first thing that came to mind. Was it his complexion? I have not clue but I just wanted to give a shout out to brit because we share the same fave. mint chocolate chip is heaven sent.

Gotta love this blog, keep em' commin' in folks!

1. Favourite Jake role and why?

It's almost a tie between Jack Twist and Tony Swofford, but I think I have to say Jack Twist. Both of the characters are so different compared to what he's done earlier in his career and really put him up there with the A-list actors imo.

2. Biggest achievement so far?

The BAFTA and his Oscar nomination.

3. What would you like to see him try next?

I'd like to see him do a play again, preferably in London since that's closer to Sweden... Or, play the villain in his next film.

4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead?

I'm most certain he would be a chef since cooking is his passion.

5. Any mistakes made, IYHO?

Hmm.... his cycling outfit. ;-)
(Sorry Jake! lol)

6. If Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be?

Chocolate. Because I love chocolate ice cream.

Miffed67 said...

-5. Contract with NIKE (if true). - katie of sweden...

He DOES love his Nike's, doesn't he? I've never seen so many different pairs, other than in the store!

Mmmmm, butter pecan! I could go for that!

1. Favourite Jake role and why?
Jack Twist. I'm gonna adore Jake the rest of my life for taking the part and making it a part of the film history. Haven't seen his other movies yet except October Sky, I want to take it nice and slow discovering his other work.

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far? Have to say BBM and God do I love the brits for giving him the Bafta.

3. What would you like to see him try next? Him playing a villain would be exiting... And Zodiac sounds really promising.

4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead? A write or a teacher both sound nice. And carpenter - I can't shake the image of him working on that table he did for his mother. Hot.

5. Any mistakes made, IYHO? Can't think of any (except maybe for the Dill!!!! I has gotta go!!!! ; ) )

6. If Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be? (whoops! how did that one get in there?) Chocolate (reminds me of a classic photo caption of him at davecullen).

1. Favourite Jake role and why?
For me it's 'Donnie Darko'. The film was my introduction to Jake and I thought he was absolutely captivating. It showed the offbeat element of Jake's personality that we've come to love so much. And he looked so good in that school uniform. Hey, don't judge me!

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far?
'Brokeback Mountain' without a doubt. I think I understand what Jake meant when he said the movie meant as much to him socially as it did artistically. As Jack he reached depths that I don't think even he realised he had as an actor, and I also think he learnt a lot about love.

3. What would you like to see him try next?
An English accent.

4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead?
I reckon he'd have become a chef. He seems to have a real passion for food. Either that or he'd have stayed in the family game and become a screenwriter/director. On the other hand, he'd make a damn good professional dogwalker.

5. Any mistakes made, IHYO?
I haven't seen all his films so I can't really say.

6. If Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be?
Green tea.

Please go on with your blog as it's now! Jake, Jake's family, Jake's dog, Jake's socks, and among all the fun a lot of serious infos, and respectful, too :)

Now, on with Jake's career...

1. Favourite Jake role and why?
Jack Twist. The more I discover Jake as Jake, the more I realise how widly different Jack is from Jake, and how subtle and to the point his acting is. And well, BBM is also my favourite film of his, and Jack the character I relate the most to, so that I can't really separate Jake's performance to my general liking of both the film and the character.

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far?

I'm going to cheat and say his career, as a whole. It's astounding how diverse and constantly interesting his roles are since the beginning of his career, and how his acting retains this subtlety and accuracy in each role. It really feels like he built something coherent with his choices in films (and play), and I hope he's going to follow in the same direction in the future! He could really become one of the greatest actors, as well as one of the greatest stars, in Hollywood.

3. What would you like to see him try next?
Something surprising! I'm not so sure about a romantic comedy - but I guess that with Jake, the genre doesn't matter, it's the something more... Definitely a character-driven film where his acting can make the difference. And if he feels like he needs to do some superproduction, then I hope he plays the villain! Villain are always so much more interesting in those things...

4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead?
He seems to be a really creative guys (like his father! And mother! And really, all his family...), so I guess he'd have chosen a career where he could express another side of his creativity. He himself talks about cooking or carpentry, and why not! But he could also have chosen another career related to entertainment. In fact, I think that one of these days, he'll get tired of (only) acting, and will venture into directing, screenwriting or at least producing.

5. Any mistakes made, IYHO?
I didn't see all his films - the one I saw were those which interested me, and I did enjoy myself. But I can't give an opinion on Bubble Boy, Highway or Lovely and Amazing. This said, I don't see mistakes in the sense that nothing put his image or career in danger. Even TDAT, though a boring film, was important for his career as it was his come back film. And it definitely brought him new fans, which is funny to see using google trends for example, here: http://www.google.com/trends?q=Jake+Gyllenhaal

6. If Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be?
Trickiest question! (I'm not such a fan of ice creams - they're cold, and Jake's hot).

I liked the answer above of mint pistachio, and the reasons given :)

Anonymous said...

1. Jack Twist/BBM, and Holden in The Good Girl.

2. Jack Twist & awards and hoo-ha surrounding all that.

3. Anything, apart from buying in to a dumb fx-driven franchise aimed at teenaged boys.

4. He'd have become a writer or director.

5. Proof.

6. Ben & Jerry's, the cookie dough one.

Anonymous said...

1. Jack Twist, for all of the reasons stated by many above.

2. BBM, for all of the reasons stated by many above.

3. I would love to see Jake in a Wes Anderson movie. I know those movies can sometimes fall flat, but they have such rich, quirky characters, and the actors always look like they're having so much fun being such odd characters, I just think it would be a perfect fit for Jake.

4. I don't know, I guess a chef.

5. Dropping out of college. Jake as a Columbia grad would have made him even sexier than he already is.

6. Cake Batter with m&ms from Cold Stone, because I drool just thinking about it.

1. Favourite Jake role and why?
Jack Twist, i mean, c'mon, everybody wants to marry a jack twist, wether you're gay or a straight girl ; during the 2 hours and half of the movie you're mentally yelling at Ennis "HOW THE FUCK COULD YOU BE SO STUPID?!?!?!"

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far?
Brokeback, or the very underestimated Jarhead

3. What would you like to see him try next?
porn... gay porn ;-)

4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead?
being a subject of scinetifical examinations ; i mean, scientists of the world should really study that man... how on earth somebody could be so hot AND sweet AND smart AND funny AND talented (not mentioning you britpopbaby ;-))

5. Any mistakes made, IYHO?
highway...yuk!

6. If Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be? (whoops! how did that one get in there?)
Haagen Dazs's Belgian chocolate... belgian, like me and... do you ever ate something better than chocolate???

1) I can't just pick one:
Donnie Darko - My first introduction to Jake. Sure, I had to rewatched the movie again to get it, but I thoroughly enjoyed how Jake portrayed such a deranged character.

Jack Twist - The combination of sensitivity, quiet strength...well, basically the melding of both ying and yang in this character shows another aspect of Jake's versatility, and growth as an actor. That and the fact that he looks mighty fine in a Stetson...

2) I think it's safe to say that whatever answer for this question is, it would be synonymous with all things Brokeback Mountain.

3) I'd like to see him play a vile villian...one who garners little/no sympathy...the type you love to hate...or hate to love. But that's going to be hard...this is Jake we're talking about after all.

4)Chef - The closest I've seen of his culinary skills is how he skins those potatoes in BBM. He actually knows how to use a paring knife.

Writer - Whether it's film, stage, novel, poetry, newsprint, or magazine, word wielding runs in the family. Need I say more? I just hope to *insert deity* that Jake doesn't pull a Hemingway if he ever takes this route...

Comedian - He's got quite the funny bone...among other bones...

5)I have to say Proof because the character interactions didn't click for me. It's not Jake's doing though. As a side note, I love the hair he has in this film, lol. It looks so soft.

6) Cappacino Cookie...a gelato flavour a local shop in my city has. Mmmm...coffee...

1. Favourite Jake role and why?
Jack Twist.Because he managed to use his own expressions and create a whole new character.Very few actors have achieved drawing that fine line:i'm looking at Brokeback and i remember the actor,Jake, only at the end..for two hours, there,on the screen,i see Jack Twist. Plus, all those perfect scenes, dialogues, the most authentic scene of crying i've ever seen..This role is pure art.

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far?
Oscar nomination and Bafta win..because having official respect of the industry counts.

3. What would you like to see him try next?
European productions.

4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead?
Writing, music or volunteer work.

5. Any mistakes made, IYHO?
The Day After Tomorrow and Proof were bad movies, but i don't think they are his mistakes. They were good experiences.

6. If Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be? (whoops! how did that one get in there?)
Vanilla with strawberry syrop.

1.Com'on. I can't just choose one.
It would have to be Jack Twist, Holden Worther and Donnie Darko.
And, yes I realise he dies in all three. Sorry.

2. His whole career is a real big achievement, at only 25 years of age.
Can you see any other actor in hollywood displaying the range he's shown in his roles at such a young age?

3. Me. He should try me. Jake. Please.

4. I think a Chef from what I've heard.

5. Buuble boy was definetly a mistake, but he makes it worth watching.
And I ain't too crazy about Highway either.

6. I will go with Nass on this one too. Jake's way too hot to be Ice Cream. Oh well if you insist, Choclate Chip.

1. Favourite Jake role and why?

First and always, Jack Twist, Brokeback Mountain. He owned that role. To go from a heartbreakingly beautiful, wildly in love 19 year old boy to a heartbroken, world weary 39 year old man was a phenomenal experience to watch. I got to say, though, that he was so cool in Donnie Darko. Dark, angsty highschool boy cute!

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far?

Oscar nod and winning the BAFTA.

3. What would you like to see him try next?

I would love to see him in an action/adventure movie, like "The Mummy" the "The Mummy Returns" or "Pirates of the Carribean" (my heart is going in to shock at the thought of him and Johnny Depp in a movie together). He could have some fun (and I think he needs that after such serious roles) and it would be a great opportunity to see him laugh and flash his fantastic smile :D

4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead?

Going by what I've read about him, I would definately go with creative endeavors, such as cooking, crafting, maybe writing. I get the impression that he's the kind of person that would try many things, wanting to learn as much as he can and contribute as much as he can.

5. Any mistakes made, IYHO?

Haven't seen all of his movies, so can't comment on that. I will say that I hope he doesn't take any of the malicious gossip about his life to heart, because that would be a mistake. All he has to do is drop by here (courtesy of britpopbaby) to see that he is more than loved!

6. If Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be? (whoops! how did that one get in there?)

This is the by far the easiest question and the answer is so obvious:

Jake would be "Dreamsicle". That lovely combination of soft, sweet vanilla mixed with the tangy goodness of orange sherbert. Oh damm, now I have to wipe the drool off of my lattop!!

This is fun, britpopbaby!

I think I have to add Holden Worther from The Good Girl to my favourite Jake roles also. I have a REALLY soft spot for him in that film and it was one of the first films I ever saw with Jake. Plus, he's really god damn good in it too.

ok, here we go

1. Am I the only one that liked Swoff? I love that jarhead and his 'come hither' babyblues.

2. All of his career is one hella of an achievement.

3. I would love to see a really witty romantic comedy from the jakester and/or something with his sister.

4.He will make a pretty good politican if you ask me. A very sexy Californian governor (move over Arnie!)

5. Highway, not even Jared could save that film.

6. Brandy Flavoured with a dash of vanilla

1. Favourite Jake role and why?
I liked his performance in Donnie Darko and Brokeback Mountain. Jake made Donnie scary and adorable; and Jack kind and loving, but also selfish and determined.

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far?
I think the recognition he got for his performance as Jack Twist. I don't mean the awards he got, but what people like us thought about it.

3. What would you like to see him try next?
I'd like to see him play a villain or a disabled person.

4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead?
A writer maybe.

5. Any mistakes made, IYHO?
Proof was a mistake. He didn't really do a bad job, but the role wasn't for him. He was a miscast, in my opinion.

6. If Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be?
Chocolate!

1. Fave role - Donnie Darko - first film I saw him in, made me sit up and take notice of him and have followed his career since. Very surreal character but very compelling.

2. Biggest achievement - I know this is going to sound really naff, but I think his biggest achievement so far is retaining a sense of being grounded and amiable despite being a huge star who is constantly followed by the paparazzi. He could so easily crack but he always seems the complete gentlemen. (waits for someone to spill the stories of his complete bitchiness!!)

3. Next - would love to see him appear on the London stage again, I'd be front row!

4. If not an actor - like others have said, a chef maybe. Although he seems a complete wacky nutter half the time that he would be entertaining people somehow.

5. Mistakes - again, TDAT. Bad film choice.

6. Ice cream - pistachio - my favourite nut :-)

1.I loved Jack Twist, it is such a unique character. But I did like Swafford a lot too. You are not the only one a few posts up!

2.Jack Twist, this is a role so unique and so difficult to do right but he nailed it masterfully.

3. I'll make you laugh, but I hope he'll sing. I think he should be special guest on a Marroon 5 song or video. I don't know why but I think that would be cool. But continue to act in movies is good enough

4. Become a writer maybe?

5. Proof. Totally miscast. He did alright but the script is bad and they made him say some seriously silly stereotypical things.

6. Chocolate!

1. Jack Twist of Brokeback Mountain. I can't picture anyone else playing Jack Twist - in fact, half of the time, i am still mixing Jack and Jake...

2. Brought Jack Twist to live and won a BAFTA for it (which is a much better Awards than stupid Oscars)

3. Come to London and do another play!

4. A handsome yummy Chef?

5. Bubble Boy? but still I wouldn't call it a mistake. It's not a bad movie.

6. Cookies and Cream? Sweet and highly chewable

1. I like swofford too, just the range that jake brings to that character is amazing he is like your look-in window to a whole new world of the marines. I also like Jake in Brokeback.

2.Definetely bringing Jack Twist to life on the big screen. I read the short story first and didn't really find twist likeable, but jake brings such a humanity and sweetness to him, I fell in love instantly.

3. Can he do a situation comedy with his sister? Where she's like an overbearing boss or something? With Peter playing his best buddy. That would be so cool.

4. Probably a chef (politician a few posts up sounds likely too)

5.Mistakes include: Proof, Highway and Buble boy (what were you thinking, Jakey?)

6. Ditto, Mint pistachio

Why y'all hating on bubble boy?
I love that movie!
Best comedy of the past couple of years, and I ain't joking I tell ya!

Man, all this talk about ice cream (and Cold Stone..OMG!) is making me crazy over here. Oh, the cravings...

Okay, back to Jakey.

1. Jack Twist, hands down. Such a nuanced, honest and moving performance. Amazing!!

2. Brokeback Mountain. It's one of my absolute favorite films. Such an important film, and a brilliant piece of art. And I have to say the BAFTA-award as well.

3. Hmm.. I think I'll go with a comedy of some kind, cause I just think he's soo funny!

4. I don't really know, but I'd go with something artistic and creative as well. Preferably a carpenter or something. Damn, that would be hot..

5. Even though I think that he's great in every role he's taken on, there are two films that I think are just complete crap (not Jakey's fault though!). So, it's gotta be a tie between Highway and The Day After Tomorrow.

6. Well, for me it's all about the chocolate! Any kind!

Lmao at this thread!
Spandex, jake should try you next? Lol!
Ok My Answers, breifly.
I. Jack Twist
2. Oscar nom/Winning the Bafta
3. I love ainttooproundtowear spandex's answer, but i think i would settle for a comedy too
4. Teacher in eastern philosophy or something
5. None whatsoever even crap like proof is worth watching and hasen't done any damage to his acting credibility.
6. I like a choclate flavored jake!

Anonymous said...

1. Favorite role has to be Jack Twist simply because that was my first exposure to Jake and he blew me away. From the moment he leaned on that truck, looking at Ennis, with that black hat and that dark blue shirt...

2. Achievement - Oscar nom/BAFTA.

3. Next role - playing a bad guy, but being able to keep the audience's sympathy, which makes a role much more believable for me.

4. I think Jake would have taken a while to find himself. He seems to be going through that process as a young man/actor now anyway. I can see him turning his hand to any number of creative things before he settled. However, he would never have been an accountant.

5. Mistakes - In roles? Not really. However, full-fledged, Mountain Man beard is a big mistake, in my book. Sorry to all you Dill fans!

6. Ice cream - How about Heath Bar Crunch? Really, though I can't equate Jake as ice cream. I can equate him with a slowly braised, toothsome veal shank or a rich, wine-drenched beef stew with all that lovely, thick gravy...I'll stop now.

I'm going to answer these without looking at anyone else's first so that no one will influence my answers.

1. Favourite Jake role and why?

Just one? Well BBM, of course. He nailed that part. I think he did as great a job as Heath. His performance was more subtle than Heath's, and I think his role was just as difficult if not more difficult to nail.

JARHEAD and OCTOBER SKY are close seconds. The first because it was so different from his other parts. Before this he had the rap of always playing the sensitive indie film guy. This film showed he could play against type.

In OCTOBER SKY he was able to take a role with the possibility of cliche and make it something inspiring in a different way, not just an after school special way. Shows he had the chops even at a young age.

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far?

BBM It's a career defining performance--for both the audience and the studios. It showed he has the acting chops and that he can be a sexy romantic co-lead.

3. What would you like to see him try next?

He seems to love theater, so I'd like for him to be able to do what he loves.

As for film, I think I'd like to see him do a romantic comedy. I think he has a real good sense of humor & would have good comic timing in a film--and we already know he has the sex appeal. :)

But to be honest, I think that at this point, I'd see him in anything.

4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead?

Chef. He grew up with restaurtant people, he has a friend who is a chef and he has said that his idea of porn is gourmet magazines. LOL

5. Any mistakes made, IYHO?

Should not have gone to Columbia at all so that we could have 2 more years worth of Jake films.

Just kidding. lol

No serious answer for this one. :)

6. If Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be? (whoops! how did that one get in there?)

Coffee ice cream with swirls of fudge and sprinkled with blueberries. :)

1. Jack F***ING Twist. Reason: Not only is he a sexy cowboy he also plays the role so well. You totally forget is Jake and you really suffering with him.

2. BBM and all the nominations for the role.

3. Drama

4. Carpenter

5. Haven't seen everything he has done yet, so I’ll pass.

6. Peppermint rock

Yeah, what HephaistionLo said. Except for the ice cream, still going for chocolate here!

I can't believe no one has mentioned Hal (Proof) for #1. I, too, loved Donnie and Jack, and Swoff was actually my introduction to the Jakeness. It's just that Hal's scruffy, geeky charm is the reason that Proof holds the all-time record for most slow-motion replays.

Miffed67 said...

cindy, Hal was definitely cute. I loved that part where he's telling Catherine that math geeks really DO have lives, you know...they hold down jobs, and play in bands and, and, and. LOL! Too funny!

1. Jack Twist in BBM. It's a role I feel Jake embraced wholeheartedly. I feel it is the role where he matured as an actor. Having gone back and watched the rest of his catalog, it is quite apparent how much he has matured.

2. Of course, being nominated for Best Supporting Actor at both the BAFTAS and the Oscars. And winning the BAFTA.

3. I'd like to see Jake take on a slick thriller role, one where he is both the bad guy and good guy.

4. Most likely an activist, a career philanthropist.

5. Yes. TDAT and Proof.

6. He'd be a gourmet flavor - the kind no one eats regularly but when they get a taste, it becomes their favorite. I'd call it Special Edition.

Got a pm, here I am.
Cool Survey...

1. Swofford: Ammazing perfomance in a somewhat mediocre film. Going from comedy (taking laxatives to escape the marines) to drama (confrontation scene) and making it beliveable.
I am also going to buck the trend and say Bubble Boy, seriously, I love Jimmy Livingston!

2.Like others have said BBM's critical plaudits.

3.Come Back to the London Stage Jake. Please.

4.Methinks he would have become a Chef.

5.I also think he has no real mistakes: even the worst films are worth watching for his perfomance.

6. Strawberry

I beg to differ with several of you. Ireally don't think Jake would have been a writer, if he hadn't become an actor. He left Columbia, after all, which would have meant a life plunged in books and constantly meeting deadlines for written work. That doesn't mean that I don't think Jake's smart, or that he's not bookish (he has to be astute about written material, because he's constantly perusing it, choosing his parts) -- just that his talents lie elsewhere. He would have had a great presence at the podium when giving readings, though. I hope he does some dramatic readings at paying venues, as actors do from time to time.

No, I think that, had Jake not been born into a rich bohemian family, surrounded by creatives, who support creative career choices, he would have ended up as some kind of salesman. ("Brokeback Mountain" is again -- as it so often is -- weirdly prescient in making him a tractor salesman.) I can imagine all the ladies in a small town (& half the men) lining up to buy a new car from him ... as long as he promises a test-drive with them ;-).

Face it, the guy was destined to be an actor. He's a performer, he's charismatic, he's even a little hammy, he thrives on attention, he seeks to elicit an emotional reaction from an audience. No way he could have been anything else but a performer. Except maybe a controversial liberal politician or the front man for a band -- those are about the only other remotely feasible career choices I'd see for Jake G.

Hm.. you're right... very good post there (above). Salesman could be it for him if he wasn't brought up as he was.

Haha, very good post anonymous 6:11.
Jake as a test driving salesman, now that's one that I hadn't thought abought

1. Favourite Jake role and why?
Swoff! Hands down. I mean, BBM was perfect, but Jarhead was just.. for me... incredible...

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far? It'll have to be all that faith the directors put in him. I mean for someone to get so many various types of roles is just amazing... I dont really expect much from the Oscars nowadays...

3. What would you like to see him try next? I want him to play a nasty, two-timing, bitchy, rude, sadistic lawyer. A role that is the ultimate in making you want to eat your own socks. I want him to take that challenge of being such a crappy guy and yet make me wanna be a fan of his even more... ITs a challenge.

4. If Jake hadn't become an actor what do you think he'd have done instead? A chef, hands down.

5. Any mistakes made, IYHO? Nope. Some of his movies might have been a bit... er.. not so good but he has never made any mistakes for himself professionally.

6. If Jake was an ice cream what flavour would he be? Chocolate Chip!!! What else is sweet, yet rugged at the same time???

1- JACK TWIST among others, a sterling and bodacious performance. Congratulations!

2- The global acknowledgment of his talent and work.

3- Working with PAUL AUSTER ( my favorite director and writer ) and with PEDRO ALMODOVAR ( another favorite, dedicated and controversial director )

4- I don't know, better asking him ... anything he likes, I presume.

5- The Day After Tomorrow - a bad movie ( not Jake performance ). All Human Beings makes mistakes. Nobody's perfect!

6- Coffee, coffee, coffee sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter, but so addicted !

1. Bringing Annie's Proulx's character of Jack Twist to life - although I haven't seen Donnie Darko yet and I think I would like him too.

2. Playing the beautiful and brave character of Jack Twist, and his Oscar nomination and BAFTA award for his stunning performance. BBM has mad such an impression on my, it has become one of my all-time favorite classic movies

3. He could probably play any role well...but I prefer drama. Maybe a thriller - I'm interested in seeing Zodiac. Or maybe a sensitive superhero like Spiderman??? Spiderman stole my heart - "this is my gift, my curse....." (sigh!) Anything that shows his depth as an actor.

4. Restauranteur/chef from what I have heard - he seems very creative, so anything that is in a creative area. It's wonderful that he as causes he believes in so an activist.

5. There are no real mistakes in life, there is always an opportunity to take something positive from any experience :-)

6. Cappuccino Chocolate Chunk, for no particular reason - just that it's my favorite!

OK, I was finally able to get back and read the other posts, and I'd like to comment.

But first, an explanation of my ice cream choice. Coffee because he seems to be a coffee fiend. Swirls of chocolate fuge because it remind me of all of that daek brown hair of his--ALL of it. lol And the blueberries because of his eyes. What can I say? I'm literal.

There is a green tea flavor of ice cream?!?

Loved the professional dog walking comment!

I love Joe Nast too. How did that movie fall through the cracks? It really is a great little movie.

The Good Girl vs Lovely & Amazing
I always think of these two toegether; I guess because of the older woman element. I'm not thrilled with either movie. They both have their weaknesses. But I prefer Jake in L&A. He seems more real in that movie. I find the GG to be a big charicature; same with his performance. Actually I thought the whole movie was too weird, but not in a good way like Donnie Darko. It was like they were trying too hard to be different.

Love the comment about watching the movie and screaming at Ennis, "HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU DENY JACK TWIST ANYTHING!" LOL (I paraphrased that because I'm too lazy to go back and find the actual quote--sorry!)

OH, and laughed out loud and scared the cats at 'porn, gay porn.'

I agree with everyone that said that Jake somehow rises above whatever crappy movie he does. He's that good.

Roles I'd like to see him in:

The story of the American Jewish runner who was not allowed to run at the '36 Olympics.
http://www.jewishsightseeing.com/germany/berlin/olympic_stadium/19990702-glickman.htm

Since seeing him with the beard so much it's made me think of roles he could be growing it for, and I thought of the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald(subject of the Gordon Lightfoot song). I've read a bit about it, and I think it would be a great movie. Of course it would be sad as hell. Also, it's probably too soon after "The Perfect Storm."

Finally, I'd love to see him in some kinky movie with Peter and Maggie. A cross between Kinsey and Secretary. And no, I wouldn't want to see ANY sexual contact between Jake and Maggie, but I'd LOVE to see some action between Jake and Peter. Yes, I'm a perv!

1. Favorite Jake role and why?

Definitely as Jack Twist in Brokeback Mountain. His performance seemed effortless and flawless, as he brought the character to life. Jack was vulnerable and masculine, and Jake nailed the emotions and the accent.

2. Biggest achievement in Jake's career so far?

I guess the Oscar nomination and BAFTA win. In my head, it's simply being in Brokeback Mountain and helping bring such an amazing movie to life. Nothing tops that.

3. What would you like to see him try next?

Well, Zodiac. I'm hoping it's good. Maybe he could do a Baz Luhrmann movie... I hope he doesn't go too mainstream though because he's had some great roles in independent features.

4. If Jake weren't an actor...

I think he'd be a carpenter or a chef considering that I've heard he's interested in cooking and carpentry.

5. Any mistakes made?

Bubble Boy, Kirsten Dunst ;)
I heard someone on IMDB say that he said Jack Twist was a straight man (who fell in love with a man). I thought that was ridiculous and irritating. He's gay or bi, obviously not straight.

6. I have no idea what ice cream he'd be...

1. OMG my fave role of his is Brokeback Mountain. And I'm not just saying this because I haven't seen many of his other movies (BBM introduced me to the beauty and acting talent that is Jake). The role he picked was wonderful and he really made it his own. He made Jack a very intense character, very real, just...just so amazing. Words can't describe how much.

2. Same as above.

3. Gosh, anything! I love Jake in all roles. He's done lots of 'different' sort of movies, he's been in action movies (i.e. Day After Tomorrow), so really I dunno what I could suggest for him next. Anything he chooses, I'll enjoy.

4. Perhaps a musician, or a director.

5. Even if he has made mistakes, it doesn't matter anymore, because as of BBM, is career is picking itself up wonderfully!

6. Mmm, icecream...and Jake...and licking...oh gosh! *hyperventilating* I think maybe...mint something, like someone else said before. Perhaps Chocolate. Or Mint-chocolate chip, I love that flavor!
