SHOWDOWN: Tonight on Letterman

My money's on the white guy.

Is it 10:30, yet?

10:26 - TV Announcer: "Dave's all new tonight with Jake Gyllenhaal and 50 Cent!" As if the magazine cover wasn't advertisement enough.

10:30 - What? The news is still on? Damn, I always forget these late night shows start at 10:35. My bedtime was 30 minutes ago.

10:35 - Ooh, the Lotto 5 drawing! I'm still poor.

OK, here we go!

10:36 - Jake's the headliner; the audience sounds appropriately enthused. And ouch, Fiddy.

10:44 - Dave brings up the 2008 Presidential race...but fails to mention Jake. What. The. Hell.

10:47 - Dave mentions Fiddy (who does not want to be called "Fiddy") before Jake when announcing his guests. As consolation, Dave refers to Jake as a "fine, young actor" and then immediately goes to commercial break.

11:10 - Jake appears, looking dapper as usual.

11:11 - Jakes tells a story about a nightcap in a drawing room (what? these are not words Americans use!) and a woman who's "shit-faced" (now there's an American term). Ha! Jake got bleeped.

11:12 - The story is still being told. It's a long story and Jake does many, many impressions of a drunk, British woman which is pretty much the best thing I've ever seen him do. The punchline of the story is: "You look like Jake Gooberballs." To explain the rest of it would take paragraphs, although apparently such phonetic mangling is the key to his heart.

11:14 - Dave brings up the family. They always seem to pop up when Jake's on Letterman. Jake talks about how Stephen used to make his Halloween costumes (Oreo cookie, Crest toothpaste tube) although his favorite seems to be the time he was a house (?). There was a battery pack involved. Jake describes it as "amazing and traumatic."

11:15 - We get to Rendition. Dave likes.

11:17 - The obligatory clip. Jake quotes Shakespeare and speaks of a love of pie charts.

And then it's over! Yet another failure for the Jake Watch E-mail Campaign. Dammit. Also, that seemed way fast. It took me longer to correct my typos than to watch the interview. OK, that's a slight exaggeration. More tomorrow!

So I'm not the only one. ;) Oh please, let something totally cool happen. I really, really, really can't wait to see this. I'm, like, dying here.

Great artwork, btw. Any chance you did that earlier, like, before today's taping, and maybe sent it to Letterman?

^^^ No. Because you know when the idea hit me? At work today when I read your blog entry. I was like, DUH! I should have thought of that forever ago! Sigh. Oh, well. Also, I am SO sad that this picture isn't available in a close-up HQ because it was MADE for this cover. I was very sad that there weren't more well-lit, color, profile-only shots of Jake looking pissed off. I mean really. I don't ask for much!!

LMAO! Funny shit PG! I can't wait to see what happens.

BirdGirl said...

BTW, I thought Kojack was dead.

BirdGirl said...

Sorry. In my excitement I tried to double post. :)

Cherita said...

LOL! BirdGirl is getting jittery with anticipation.

Oh well, PG. I guess if you had sent it, we'd only be that much more disappointed if he ignored it. But I'm trying to remain positive--there are still plenty of opportunities for either the campaign or the album to emerge, and Dave may yet surprise us.

Strange to think there's a shortage of profile-pissed-off Jake. The man has been photographed in every situation and from every angle imaginable. But I actually love the one that you chose. Something about them both having facial hair, gives it symmetry. Plus it's just like Jake to have totally the wrong expression on his face.

Very true.

BPB did indeed see Jake in London! Although she might not remember...

Anonymous said...

Ha, BPB called him Jake Gooberballs!

BirdGirl said...

OMG. Gooberballs! Jesus that's priceless. I am a little sad that Jake doesn't know how to make a martini. :)

He looks so freaking hot in those clips. I know that this is getting redundant but, I can't wait until Friday.

I can't help but wonder if Stephen ever regrets letting his son become an actor. Because if he was a basketball player, he wouldn't frequently be invited to speak with late night tv hosts and tell unbelievably embarrassing stories about his screwball father.

What was that that Cantara said once? About Jake being his father's son? :)

Man, I gotta go to bed. But HA! on the drunk lady being BPB. I would hope that Jake's impression of brits would never be so...harsh. ;D

heddaparsons said...

Geez, his appearence seemed rather quick! LOL, Gooberballs, Jake needs to do comedy already.

Great blogging PG and again I bow down to your photoshopping skills, what a brilliant cover!

My mom made me this uncomfortable Hersheys Kiss Halloween costume when I was about 6 so I feel his pain.

He is so cute when he talks about his family.

Jake mentions being a "house" in an interview he did to "Regis and Kelly" (though Regis was not at that time) while he was promoting Zodiac I believe.
It's quite cute in that interview, it must be somewhere online, I think iheartjake has it.

Thanks PG! Sleep well!

BirdGirl said...

I better shove off and go to bed too. I gotta be up to watch the Today show ya know. :) If I can ever come down from my Jake high.

Great job PG. Good night ladies.

Do they call peanuts "goobers" in Britain, like we do in the States?

. . . . peanutballs. . . .

Anonymous said...

Goobers are a brand of candy consisting of chocolate-coated peanut. They were introduced in 1925 by the Blumenthal Chocolate Company.

britpopbaby said...

I'm mortally offended. I would never use the word 'Goober'.

Thank you PG!! Incredibly hilarious as always...:)

That was a good interview, Jake's been funny and cute although once more we're forced to learn that audience's contributions are not contemplated on TV shows, they always do just what THEY had already planned to do...quite annoying...:/

Sam said...

Awesome! Thanks for that guys

10:44 - Dave brings up the 2008 Presidential race...but fails to mention Jake. What. The. Hell.

I bet you nearly wet your pants when that sentance started!!!

I guess from the rolling stones article that Jake is officially NOT teaming up with fiddy for his album then? Damn...

was the drunk woman gilbert gottfried by any chance?

Anonymous said...

Drunk woman wasn't Jordan/Katie by any chance, I imagine a drunk Jordan/Katie is completely terrifying.

Well, it looks like the interviewers (Jonathan Ross, Letterman, Meredith Viera) really like Rendition. I know critic reviews have been mixed, so it's been nice to hear the three of them praise it. I don't think they would go on and on about how powerful and well-made they think the film is if they geniunely didn't like it.

Becky Heineke said...

So...on behalf of those of stuck at work, can anyone fill us in a little more on what happened on the Today Show?

Anonymous said...

Just sayin' - "goober" means peanuts in southern USA - peanuts sometimes called goober peas. Afro etymology. gooberballs is an insult. kudos to Jake for the confidence in his own privates and his sense of comedy to use this encounter!

& kudos to you guys for great stuff, live blog and so forth!

it's laughter rocks the world!

PG, jake was mostly formal and respectful in his interview, as he typically is in the morning shows. looked like he trimmed his beard-- it's much shorter than it was at the premiere, and i have to say, WAY more flattering. meredith starts off bringing up jake's comment during the commercial break about not allowing al roker to throw anymore opening pitches at games, because he was bad luck for his team (the red sox lost to the indians). this exchange was a little awkward to start, since i don't think jake expected to be asked to explain an off-hand comment he made off the air. we move on to rendition, and meredith praises, and we see a clip of the meryl phone call scene. she asks if it's important to him that he makes films with messages, and jake responds that it's important to him NOT to make films with messages, since message films tend to be preachy. it's impt to him to make films with humanity (or human element) and heart. and THEN, meredith's foot-in-mouth moment comes when she's like, speaking of movies with heart, let's talk about BBM. did any of you know when you were making the movie what you were sitting on at the time? and she's like, ooh, oops, bad choice of words, sorry. and jake's like, wow, very well put, meredith. haha. and then it winds down after that. pretty dry interview but for that last comment. oh, and at one point she brings up his cycling with lance, and jake's like, yeah, i'm meeting up to ride with him after actually. any one catch the regis and kelly interview?

Anonymous said...

yeah-saw Regis. Jake was on for two segments. Talked about the Interview cover and him being the most eligible bachelor. Poked fun at Letterman, and Regis tried to get Jake to tell what he did for fun in NYC last night, but Jake wouldn't say. Then said he hung out w/ Danny deVito and Clooney, but it was a joke...

Becky Heineke said...

Thank you, thank you!! Both of you! I figured the Today Show would be more reserved but wow, what a gaffe on Meredith's part. Snort. I'll be way interested to hear that segment on Message Movies since Rendition has been hailed far and wide as a Message Movie...and I actually thought it was a little preachy (!). The Regis & Kelly interview sounds like it was predictably lighter. And longer. :) So that's two down and one to go for the day...

Anonymous said...

Thought it was over too quick as well, PG. And did you see how Dave cut his eyes at Precious when he said "shit faced!" even after Jake asked permission to say shit. Dave said go ahead and then that eye rolling thing. So what's up with that, huh?

Tho, I must compliment David Letterman on really being up to date and current on Jake's movie work. Moreso that the Today show, which, can't seem to "quit" talking about BBM.
Jake told the Halloween as a house story on Regis a couple of years ago ...when he gave that smoldering...but fleeting glance at Kelly.

Will there be any reports here about the "incident" that occurred outside Letterman? I saw a photo of poor Jake being assaulted by someone in a pink sweater, disguised as a very young, pretty, blue-eyed girl with a fetching figure. Poor Jake. He looked visibly upset. And his body guard just watched!

"I love pie charts"-hes like su sorta geek god

BirdGirl said...

I just want to say that Jake looked positively breathtaking on the Today show this morning. I don't know if it was the tired look in his eyes. He just looked soft and beautiful.

Well maybe I'm crazy. Maybe I'm just not used to seeing Jake that early in the morning. :)

Anonymous said...

I didn't care for the Today show interview at all, I'm sure Jake is tired of them bringing up BBM, what about Zodiac? And the "joke" was tacky. On the other hand Kelly and Regis was a lot better believe or not? And of course they had to ask the who are you dating question. He answerd that his social life is fine, good for him.

Can't wait for the live blogging of Conantonight, good work PG!!

So sorry! The martini should have tipped me off. Of course you would have asked for gin. :)

Sheesh ! Is this work day *EVER* going to end ? Peeps know I got me some Jake watchin' to do ! HURRY UP ! Good great gravy and Gyllenhaal's dressed up as houses! Wonder what costumes Maggie got put in to ha ha :)

Thanks to those wonderful people who posted about TDS and R&K interviews for those of us that have to work ... :-p

Pee Gee, wasn't it about this time last year that you were having the great experience of meeting me ? ;)

Bobbyanna, I assume you are speaking of The Picture With the Inappropriate Hand Placement? I did try to upload it (several times) this morning and Blogger (no lie) would not accept it. This was obviously a sign from God that the picture is best left in the dark. At least that's how I read it. ;)

And Dee! Was it not October 15?! I think it was. In which case, we missed our anniversary! :(

Martinis are gin.

I've never seen Jake so animated - the gyllengiggle gooberballs AND unbuttoning his suit jacket - with his left hand ONLY. He is so talented! Oh, and a little tongue action, too. It doesn't get any better than this. Or will it!? Thanks again, PG.
