HEY, JAKE'S PR. I'M BILLING YOU BY THE HOUR FOR THIS.

I now present...
The 2006 Official Jake Gyllenhaal Fan Survey as sponsored by Jake Watch.
Did you wonder why we did this? Me, too! Just kidding. Seriously, I find this fascinating. You probably won't.

(I'm going to try to make this look scholarly just in case anyone wants to go around spouting our numbers. This was totally a legitimate scientific undertaking, you know.)

Where these numbers came from:
We got 166 responses to our survey via e-mail, the IHJ Community, and the Jake Watch comments section (to view the survey, look here). The responses came from 30 different countries (that's counting the UK as 1). The survey was advertised on this site, at the IHJ Community, and both on the "Jake's Eyelashes" thread and The Daily Sheet at the Dave Cullen Ultimate Brokeback Forum. It also received a mention in the comments section at Waiting for Toothy.

Where these charts and percentages came from:
The aforementioned 166 responses + Excel + PG's head.

What these numbers could have told us:
We hoped to gain enough responses from these four Jake communities (JW, IHJ, WFT, and DC) to be able to compare the demographic make-up of each readership. Yeah, not so much. There are some numbers towards the end of the post comparing results from each of these sites, but they speak only for the sample who responded to the survey and NOT the community as a whole (you were counted as part of community if you listed it as your first website choice). Aside from Jake Watch, no one site had enough responses to warrant a usable representative sample. See, I told you this was legitimately scientific.

What these numbers actually told us:
We did learn a little about Jake fans in general (Jake Watch readers in particular), and you're just as I imagined you! Darling! Every last one of you! Occupation and internet connection data are not analyzed below because this is complicated enough as it is (your results are safe and will most likely be used at a later date). With 100% of the precincts reporting (the following results utilize responses from all websites):

You're female...
(Although, I gotta give it up for the 10% of you representing the other side of the gender line.)

You like Brokeback Mountain (a lot)...
You like Jack "See ya fur supper" Twist, too...
You're relatively new to being a Jake fan...
(That should be "year in which individual became a Jake fan." It's possible that's self-explanatory.)

And check out your amazingly uniform age range graph...
You guys ranged from age 12 to 60+, with most of you falling somewhere neatly in the middle. I was surprised we didn't sway younger. Does this mean Jake is less appealing to teens than older movie-goers? Who knows? That wasn't part of the survey.

Fun Facts:

- Not a single person mentioned Lovely and Amazing.

- Every person who listed Proof as their favorite movie also listed WFT as their number one site.

- 3 of you listed Jake's greatest achievement as "breaking up with Kirsten Dunst."

- Another 3 listed his greatest achievement as "birth."

- 36% of Americans went with Jake's Oscar nomination; 25% opted for the BAFTA win. For non-Americans, 38% went Oscar, 46% went BAFTA.

- Only 1 person converted to Gyllenhaalism in the year 2000.

- There was no readily apparent correlation between age and the year a person became a fan (no one year saw a peak in older or younger fans).

- More non-Americans listed their favorite cause as Rock the Vote than Americans.

- No Americans listed the College Summit as their favorite cause.

- Almost exactly half of you listed either Rock the Vote or the ACLU as your favorite cause. Future Forests and Livestrong tied as the third most popular cause.

- 66% of Jake Watch fans listed IHJ as their second choice.

- 35% of IHJ fans didn't list a second site at all.

- Not a single Dave Cullen fan listed WFT as their second choice (although 3 WFT fans listed DC and their number two).

- 86% of you said you visited your number one site at least once daily.

- 78% of you who listed Jarhead as your favorite movie also listed Swofford as your favorite character. 71% of you went with both Brokeback and Jack Nasty. Only 38% doubled up on Donnie Darko.

- 73% of you who listed Future Forests as your favorite cause also listed Jack Twist as your favorite character. Only 37% of Rock the Vote people went with Jack.

- 64% of you who liked Jarhead also thought Jake's greatest achievement was his Oscar nomination. Only 29% of Brokeback fans agreed with you.
- 92% of the people who listed Donnie Darko as their favorite movie were under the age of 40.

- 14% of you were from the United Kingdom, but there wasn't a single representative from Ireland.

- PG to BPB, "Hey, I wonder how many responses we'd have to get before someone says their favorite movie is Highway?" Answer: 166. It was the last entry.

More for aesthetics than anything else, the countries represented by these numbers (45% American):

- 100% of DC fans (perhaps predictably) listed Brokeback Mountain as their favorite movie.

- Whether comparing results from each individual site or looking at all the responses as a whole, Brokeback Mountain was always your favorite movie. Donnie Darko was always your runner up.

Interesting!
And LOL Simon! I'd like to see PG looking all scientific too. ;)

What pleases me the most is the fact that the "stupid fan-girl" brand can now be erased to never be used again by certain people...

Anonymous said...

that's so awesome:D!!
are you gonna do more surveys like this?:) like every year/mounth/week/day?<<' :P
and BTW, how many people were from Israel?:P ('cuz I know only one person except for me, so it be cool to find out about more^^)

Agnes said...

This is great PG. Very interesting good work!!

And I can see Sweden have its share of agents.

Anonymous said...

americans are in majrity for sure, but it's the rest of us that makes such a beautiful rainbow... :)

cina said...

We sure do agnes! Looks to me like Sweden is Jake's third biggest fanbase in the world! :) Not bad!

Becky Heineke said...

Man, I should have mocked up a picture me in a lab! Oh, well. I was afraid I was going to shut down Blogger with the size of the post anyway. I'll save that for next time. I don't know what happened with all the crazy centering. I think it's fixed now.

beabee, we only had one survey submitted from Israel (I'm guessing yours? all the spreadsheet data was put in anonymously). I don't think this survey was necessarily a good indicator for nationality since it was strictly voluntary (unlike say, if we chose random IP addresses from SiteMeter and sent surveys only to those people).

Becky Heineke said...

Oh, but that said, I think from experience that Cina's right and Sweden's probably third on the list. :)

Anonymous said...

Well done! Love all your graphics and how they show what an amazing diversity Jake has in his fans. This is just a sample of the millions who adore him!

cina said...

PG - I don't know that I'm that trustworthy, but from the look of the diagram over nationalities it looks like Swe is no. 3. But then again, I need new glasses so there is a chance I'm completely wrong! ;)

Anonymous said...

How come you left out BetterMost?

Anonymous said...

Man, I knew French people were really bad at reading english !
Though, judging from the colours, I can't exactly figure out whether I'm from Kazakhstan or France...
Thank you for that funky survey (that i couldn't complete on time but i'm just an average Brokeback-Jack Twist - thirtysomething - fan).

Anonymous said...

Wicked here-
Wow! How many hours did it take you guys to compile all that? That looks like a lot of work! Very interesting results.

Becky Heineke said...

Only two people listed Bettermost as their top site. I couldn't, in good conscience, use those results to represent a community with several thousand members. :P

Cina, you're so right. I looked back at the numbers and Sweden is definitely number 3 behind the US and the UK. However, someone could argue that it just so happens that the Swedes who visit this site are more vocal than people from other countries and thus more likely to participate in a public survey. We have a sampling bias towards people more inclined to be active participants as opposed to passive readers. This is a problem because passive readers actually make up a significant portion (if not a majority) of this site's traffic.

For instance, from looking at the SiteMeter over the months, I know that we have readers in Japan, but we don't have a single survey from that country. That's why I put the disclaimer at the top that the results were only representative of the participants of the survey and not the community as a whole. It could be BBM fans have a tendency to be more vocal, too, but DD fans aren't and that actually these two movies are much closer in the numbers than it appears (random example).

DAAAAYUM! Dr. Whit is totally sitting at home right now thinking, that girl really did learn some shit in my class!! :)

Anonymous said...

dear PG: possible reason why there were only two responses from BetterMost: that's cause you forgot to come over here and invite us! :P

Anonymous said...

it hurts to know i'm just avarage& just like everybody else.

i always thought i was oxtraordinary...

Becky Heineke said...

^^^ Touche. I promise that wasn't intentional. I'd be lying if I said that we didn't have an ulterior motive which isn't indicated anywhere in these results. We'll probably approach this slightly differently if we do it again.

Becky Heineke said...

Oops, that ^^^ was for Bettermost. That ALWAYS happens to me!!!

Anonymous said...

Jake skews older because he attracts more mature, intelligent person.
Did I just say were mature?...(well all things are relative).

As for Sweden?...they maybe be 1# as a ratio of the population? (did you consider that Cina?)

which would mean that more Swedes than ppl ofany other nationality are mature and intelligent. :DDDD

Love the survey, and thank you for all the hard work on the results (and the beautifully colored pie charts!)

Let's make this an annual (semi-annual?) event. Now that all the non-responders have seen how cool it is, they'll surely want to participate and be represented!

salailama said...

LOVED the fun facts. PG, you do have a knack for numbers, so impressive! and 166 responses, whoa. MAP PROPS!

i have more questions-- what were yours and BPB's responses for some of the main questions? like fave movie, fave character, fave cause, year of conversion? oh, and was there any correlation between age and favorite movie? i'm thinking about why jake fans skew older than expected, and i bet he gained a lot of his older fans from bbm, and a lot of his younger fans from dd...? i enjoyed lovely and amazing, but i'm guessing the part was too small to warrant a favorite-mention.

Anonymous said...

you know this is the only graphs I have been interested in looking at in a LONG Time. isn't science wonderful :D

It was a very interesting undertaking you guys went through. I'm sure you're exhausted and need a well deserved rest.

oh btw, the check is in the mail :P

That's a valid point actually, Simon. LOL

Oh I'm SO buying that! After all, we do have the Nobel prize don't we? ;)

Love this survey! Love it. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. The internet can be a beautiful thing. Where else can I hang out with all these beautiful ppl and feel a real sense of community. Maybe it's the season and all that, but I just want to thank you BPB and PG for making this the coolest place to hang out in cyberworld! I'm crying as I type this.
And ...I just love Jake. Just adore him. He has the best fans in the world. Serious, intelligent ppl not drooling superficial dopes. Thoughtful, witty, ppl who aren't at all distracted by his looks..do we care that he has the most killer beautiful body in the world? Do we care that he has the most gorgeous smile, or those EYES, or that he has that walk? Do we mind that sometmes he forgets his underwear or that he might get a lousy haircut and then wait weeks and weeks for it to grow out? Do we mind that sometimes he likes to take his shirt off and flash that bare, hairy, muscular torso at the WHOLE WORLD? No. We love him for himself.

Anonymous said...

What were the ulterior motives behind the survey, PG? ;o)

Speaking of rendition in all its forms, I did a bit of research and came up with this article:

www.postmoderncritic.com/renditions

It's got some stuff on the other Rendition film project based in the UK as well, which should hit independent theatres before Jake's film.

(Btw, please don't check out my Brokeback Mountain review if you loved the movie... you'll kill me. (In fact don't check it out at all, because it need serious editing!)

Btw, how do you make links clickable? I apologise if it's been asked before.

Becky Heineke said...

Smurfette, there weren't any noticable trends for any movie that I could see, except for Donnie Darko, in which 92% of the people who listed it were under 40. Man, that was a good one. I'll have to add that to the post.

Well, you can see britpop's answers on the post with the survey, but as for me, I'm a boring US/24/F/admin/2005/BBM/Jack Twist/FF/BAFTA/JW/IHJ/daily+/BB. I belong to the demographic of "average."

Anonymous said...

@em:
to make a link clickable you type:

(a href="link")whatever you want to have as link (/a)

but you have to change () into <>

some of us (like me) do our fair share of drooling as well LOL

Oh no, due to my laziness in not filling out the survey it looks like Ireland is devoid of Jake Love - not true!

Other than by my nationality I wouldn't have altered the demographic at all - I'm distinctly average:

Ireland/30/F/Film consultant/2002/BBM/Jack Twist/RocktheVote/RocktheVote/JW/IHJ/almost daily

Nothing Really Matters said...

How mayny males were there! Well i guess i could work that out!

But how many males did you have that use a female as a picture!?? Maybe i shouldn’t ask that!

britpopbaby said...

AMAZING!

And for the BetterMost fan - I must truly apologise. I do have an account at BetterMost but when I went over to advertise the survey I forgot my password. And then I forgot to check my old email account for the password reminder. Sworry - I was hoping you'd see it somewhere else. Like PG said, if we attempted this again at some point we'd advertise hard and leave the date open longer.

And maybe make up a proper form.

Anywho, it still rocks. Shout out to my UK peeps!

Nothing Really Matters said...

Was the answer 16??

Anonymous said...

10% out of 166, i'd say closer to 17, unless smn was only partly male... that could be me, in fact.

i'm fucked.

Nothing Really Matters said...

kaydee i was trying to do that in my head!

16.6 so i guess it is 17!

There were 16 guys. I rounded up to the nearest percent...I guess it would actually be 9.6% male.

Good work PG! The fact that more non-Americans chose Rock the Vote as their favorite cause than Americans is disturbing to me on so many levels. Was surprised to see that his fans skewed a little older than I thought.

Anonymous said...

i'm not sure it's the question of his fans or of JW fans, who were in majority in the survey and may not be representative of his fanbase.

Becky Heineke said...

^^^ Seriously! What's up with that?! America passed the 300,000,000 mark in October, Simon. Google seems to be, dare I say it, not up to date.

Becky Heineke said...

Ha! Kaydee, that's the second time you've done that to me today. Jumping ahead of my little arrow dealios. :D

salailama said...

92%, wow. that's very interesting, PG. and you're far from average if you were able to generate this report. i think we all agree it's pure awesomeness.

i think my next project is to pimp DD to everyone here. it's one of those movies you can watch a million times and still pick up new things, make new associations/conclusions. the original cut DVD is my most watched jake disc.

anneka, if you're here (since you're apparently not a figment of BP's imagination =P), can i put in a plea for DD as the next review candidate? unless of course, you decide you do want to tackle bbm, cuz i'd love to see that too.

As someone who's spending a good part of her working day looking at PowerPoints with exactly these kinds of pie charts & tables on them -- only for far more tedious subjects --I can say you two women did a truly splendid job of compiling the data & presenting it in a readable format.

(I have to say, also, that I'm very curious about your hidden motive.)

I'm hoping for spreadsheets on Jake's wardrobe, facial hair & changing musculature next. ;-)

That was me, above. Sorry. Blogger didn't "take" my name.

I took the "Rock the Vote!" thingy as encouragement from the rest of the world! It was my choice, but I must say I was torn btwn Rock the Vote and ACLU.

In the U.S.,we have the state of Florida which also looks like a penis. But one with little direction.

Anonymous said...

How many people from Iceland voted? It's like the smallest country. Lets say that five of them did. That would be 5 out of 300.000, I bet that's more persentage then any other country. Am I rigt? Or are there countries with less population on the list?

cina said...

I'm terribly sorry simon!
Is there anything I can do to make you feel better? Re-draw the map of Sweden perhaps? Or what if you try to think of it as a... banana? Cucumber?

Anonymous said...

come on Simon. what's wrong with the association? it could be worse... couldn't it?

cina said...

I hope I didn't traumatize you forever simon! But I'm sure you'll get over it eventually.

Right now I'm busy watching our swedish astronaut doing his spacewalk as I type. (Thank God for the internet and the NASA homepage!) I bet he doesn't think of sweden as a penis looking down on it from space... LOL ;)

LMAO Simon! :D

Hm. Do we have any norwegian Jake Watchers...?

"What pleases me the most is the fact that the "stupid fan-girl" brand can now be erased to never be used again by certain people..."

What is this supposed to mean? Fan girl is not an age but a mentality. There are 50-year-old fangirls (claymates). Don't try to stir up trouble again. Certain people.

Anonymous said...

Wow!

You guys put WAY more effort into this than I did into my math project for school. All of this information is actually quite interesting. Thank you for posting it and taking the time to tally it all up.

I wonder if anyone from the movie industry will ever use this...?

Anonymous said...

Do BPB and PG have an ulterior motive???? Bcz I happened to be having lunch with Barbara Broccoli
when she was on the phone with this girl who seemed to be trying to convince her to do a futuristical James Bond: Son of... kinda thing and Ol' Barb said to re-work the screenplay based on new demographic info...and she also was overheard telling the person at the other end of the phone to scrap any notion of calling the project SockWatch.

Becky Heineke said...

How many people from Iceland voted?

Amazingly enough 3. We may have a new ratio champion!

Re the fangirl issue, I believe Cina was referring to that word's recent use as a derogatory term. It has some negative connotations. I really don't think she was trying to stir up trouble.

Anonymous said...

This is a really fascinating survey with so many interesting details. I really liked the points/correlations you picked out. Some are very counter-intuitive, which makes for great reading.

Thanks for doing this guys. It truly is extremely well done, and more importantly, it makes us Jake fans feel important ;)

you know Simon, in my young innicent days i actually thought that scandinavia looks like a dragon eating a lollipop (danmark). :D

it does have to do, in a roundabout way - my dirty mind.

also onanistic bcz focussed on ourselves rather than on jake, like the present thread, mostly.

and florida isn't penis shaped (like smbd mentioned above), unless you've got a strangely shaped penis imo

I am hoping that, upon seeing the age range of respondents to the survey, maybe some trolls who occasionally visit the blog will stop imagining that all us readers are fragile adolescent girls who burst into tears & hug their teddy bears very tightly whenever someone says anything really mean about their Jakey.

I believe that every woman approaching menopause -- that means, anyone who gets within about 10 years of it -- should receive an emergency medical kit from the worldwide offices of the Red Cross that includes a picture of Jake & some explicit instructions on how to make use of it, should the occasion arise. ;-)

Is it possible for you to announce the detailed list of the exact number or percentage of each countries of these 166 people? Other than aesthetic reason, this is interesting and intriguing fact to know too.. Thanks.

I am hoping that, upon seeing the age range of respondents to the survey, maybe some trolls who occasionally visit the blog will stop imagining that all us readers are fragile adolescent girls who burst into tears & hug their teddy bears very tightly whenever someone says anything really mean about their Jakey.

THANK YOU!! That's exactly what I was talking about in my first post where I mentioned the "fan girl" thing. Some anonymous person bashed me because of it, so you saying basically the same thing makes me happy. Only you said it in a better way than I, obviously. :)

5:18:PM I know Lance wasn't mentioned in the rumored celebrities to show up, but I'm so used to all of them togehter. It looks like they have abandoned Matty for the moment!

Provided everyone answered honestly; but as stated before age has nothing to do with it. It's the mentality.

it seems strange to be posting a comment 141 comments after the fact. BUT i would just like to say the results were fantastic! You did such a good job. All day i have been wondering how in the world u put that all together, i admire you! I am surprised that jarhead isnt as popular, but being my favourite i guess im bias. There must of been a few of us aussies which was nice to see. Im really glad and thankful you did that PG, although it doesnt obviously show ALL jake fans, it gives us a great insite to whats going on behind the scenes (of an internet webpage).

You'll have to email us if you want further details on any of the stats. Blogger might die if we tried adding anymore info.

i also feel very after the fact, but why would anyone lie about their age to make themselves OLDER? would these so called young "fan girls" really over think something like this and skew themselves older just so they could seem more mature? that thinking seems bizarre to me.

Hmm, possibly to be not viewed as a fangirl, which is erroneously believed to be an actual age. And being a fangirl doesn't necessarily mean you are young. Just your thinking and logic is.

^^^ Yup! You were the sole Highway! Somehow you wound up being the very last one put in and I laughed and laughed because I had e-mailed that brits the day the survey went up and said that about how many we'd have to get before we got a Highway. Of course it would be the last one! ;)

I ALMOST put Highway as my fav movie, but I had to give due respect to Donnie Darko, considering it's what made me a fan in the first place. Anyways, that was actually quite interesting, I'd love to see it done again in say a year or so and see how results have changed.
