I don't know about you but I've noticed that Jake has kept a pretty low profile since, well, I started this freakin' blog. Not that I blame him one iota but it does leave peeps like us in a slight pickle. I, for one, cannot possibly sit, twiddle my thumbs and eat jam butties, waiting for the release of Zodiac so I've come up with a cunning plan! When Jake goes MIA I've decided it would be best to get a 'back-up-imaginery-hot-actor-boyfriend'. Care to join me?
My BUIHAB (pronounced be-hab) at the present moment is Mr Carmine Giovinazzo aka Detective Danny Messer, CSI: Noo Yawk. I would now like to weigh up some pros and cons to see where he falls on the Gyllenscale, mainly for my entertainment. Bare with me.
PROS
- Appears on my TV screen once a week in a scheduled time slot i.e a reacurring date that never lets me down
- Has THE sexiest Noo Yawk accent that is, I'm afraid to say, way hotter than Big G's LA tone
- Rides a motorbike
- Did I mention it was a Harley?
- Italian roots - ooo, my favourite.
- Practical man - fixed his own roof. Where does that stand against making a table for your mother?
- Baseball career was ruined by a back injury - I'm a sucker for a Florence Nightingale story.
- Owns a cat.
- Paints...topless.
- And the big one for me - drinks tea. If he makes a decent brew this will up his game ten-fold.
CONS
- Smokes. Ack! Sorry, it's my pet peeve. It's not the lung cancer so much but the stench. If they made nice smelling cigarettes it'd be a different story.
- CSI:NY - not that great a show. Not sure how many murdered-by-a-lampshade-and-we-have-the-DNA-to-prove-it storylines I can handle.
- Plays golf. I have issues with golfers, many issues.
- Often pictured wearing a trilby
- Seems to be trying to start some kind of 'rap' career but I'm hoping I imagined that
- Apparent playboy - I really don't have time to keep my eye on a man that flits between foxes like it's going out of style
- Only 5"9 - britpopbaby likes to wear stilettos.
- Hangs out with Lt Dan - may be a perpretrator in his crazy schemes.
GYLLENSCALE RATING:
Discuss.
Oh, one more thing. Ennis and Jack never did it for me, mostly cos I don't fancy Heath Ledger but Tag off Friends and Messer - bad, bad things.

doesn't jake smoke as well?
harley's good, topless depends on the state of his chest, though...
5,9 makes him totally unaccepatble in my book. i would have to crouch to look him in the eye.
what's a trilby?
I accept no substitutes for Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal.
Only his near relations, sometimes.
(Does he perhaps have a hot but not-famous cousin who resembles him even a little?)
Kaydee,
There was talk that Jake quit smoking during the summer. I hope that talk is true.
Hate to think of him getting cancer...and all that smoke eventually reeks havoc with the skin and teeth. (Yuck) So, that's one rumor that I really hope is true.
ok, cats are good, scheduled regular time is good. but really: smoking, shortish and not very nicely built, is he?
doesn't even mesure up to Mr Gyllenhaal.
when i need a fix of male beauty and jake is unavailabe, i go to look at jean marais.
http://andrejkoymasky.com/liv/fam/biom2/mara2a.jpg
i'd even say he is more perfect thatn jake. his only disadvantage is that he is, sadly, already dead.
He has an AMAZING body - maybe I didn't pick the best pics
WhoTF is that? Sorry, but he is off scale down below on the negative side for me...
But, WTBGirl, Gary Sinise ... now we are talking...
nobody will EVER beat Jake - when I don't get enough of him, I try to trick myself into having dreams about it, in which I play a substantial role. Doesn't always work, but when it does...oh my!
by the way, Britpopbaby - I adore the Jake-o-meter, especially the expressions! Where else can we employ this fantastic device???
Although I have to admit there's a 'certain something' about Gary Senise, my heart belongs hook line and sinker to JG - that's just the way it is and nothin's to be done about it.
I have two or three ah,...let's call them 'mates' I hang out with when my beloved is MIA...right now, for example, I'm cuddled up with the November issue of Vanity Fair, bcz George knows that Jake is my One True Love and he's a great shoulder to lean on. Tonight I will watch Donnie...Brasco...another good friend...and fugeddabout the fact that I haven't seen or heard from my One True Love in maybe...gasp...three days...When I can no longer control myself and become an absolute slut...I will run Kingdom of Heaven thru the DVD player...not bcz "I'm bored or wicked..." but bcz I am desperate for distraction...but truthfully, gotta say...for sexual healing, nothing works better then a dose of Ledger...he KNOWS how I feel about Jake...so on a scale of one to ten, this guy, the Italian from CSI, doesn't even register. My mates understand that there is only Jake and truthfully, I think a couple of them share my feelings.
Dude you make me laugh!
Lol!!! anon 9:07.
That was funny....I wish you would sign a name, I am loving your sense of humor
Totally off topic, but I was just over at the Brokeback auction of all the clothing from the movie, and all of Jake's shirts have no size as they were custom made for him...is this normal for the movies, or is he just such a spectacular specimen that no "ordinary, off-the-rack" shirt will do?
I think it's bcz he's special.
He has a special body. The fabric from those shirts probably never touched human skin before it touched Jake's skin. And the jeans!!! OMG! If I were those jeans, I'de be delirious just knowing who's legs I'd sheath.
Get me my oxygen!
Look. You try to keep busy. As long as possible. When you reach a point where your banging your head on the wall..as I am... just put Jarhead on and fast forward to the good parts. Then Proof. And fast forward to the good parts. Then Moonlight Mile, etc. etc. I think with PG and other agents already in the vicinity, we're doing as much as we can...it's the waiting that's the hard part...
Is tonight the Marie Antoinette thing in NYC?
by the way, Britpopbaby - I adore the Jake-o-meter, especially the expressions! Where else can we employ this fantastic device???
I'll think of some more ways! Maybe we can rate everything on the Gyllenscale - not just people.
And part of me is glad none of you like the lovely Carmine - means my competition is narrowed down to just Anneka. He's hot though, remove the Jake blinkers.
Mr. Giovinazzo does have a certain appeal, but I just can't get past the fact that his first name is "Carmine."
The clothing does has sizes.I saw medium for some shirts and the trousers were pretty long actually 33 leg.The fat suit is a riot.lol
sorry brits this guy is fug... nothing like jake
No competition from me Brits! Jake is my only desire. ;-D
Sorry Brit
Jake is number one, it would take an awful long time with him MIA before I would turn to Josh
See I’m still loyal, even the subs name starts with a “J”.
OT: No socks in the auction so far! Plus $120.00 shipping to the UK, robbing barstools!
he looks like lt dan to me! haha, maybe i'm weird, but yeah, i agree that gary sinise has something about him that's pretty sexy in a weird way, so yeah, this guy seems hot.
justjake, i was looking thru the auction too-- now we know jake's jean size (check jake's outfit with the brown leather jacket-- over $6000 now): so jake's a 34 * 36... hot!
i meant $5000 sorry
too short for my liking sorry brits :)
hmm
i'll ponder on plan b..
hehe, the auction's fun! omg, how jake's FAT SUIT not the highest bid item on the list-- take one look at the pics on the mannequin and tell me it doesn't evoke naughty thoughts on the sex...?

Sorry Brit,
Carmine G is not even a 5 on the Gyllenscale. Let's face it 5'9"? Blonde? Smoker? But then I am not enamored of the fair-haired boy type either. I do make an exception for Heath however, because of that smile and those gorgeous eyes of his. HL could be a 9 or better.
Dark hair, blue eyes, tall, great body. How can any one compare. Jake has it all. And another thing, whilst we are on the subject. Has anyone else noticed Jake's beautiful expressive hands? A man's hands tell alot about him.
Could "Gyllenhand Watch" help to pass the time while we're waiting for Zodiac?
mpom I'm totally with you on his hands and we should DEFINITELY have a "Gyllenhand Watch"!!!
He's not so cute to me but eh what do I know? Jonathan Rhys Meyers is my Jake-Is-Too-Fucking-Busy-To-Go-Out-For -A-Smoothy-So-I-Need-A-Backup Boyfriend.
Can the Jake-Meter be a permanant fixture Brit? We can do that once a week. Find some random hollywood beefcake and throw him up on the ol' Jake scale.
Apologies if this has been referred to earlier, but there are some nice comments about JW here
http://stephengyllenhaal.wordpress.com/2006/10/09/bottom-feeders/
Umm did somebody call the DC bottom feeders? Ummm maybe there is an anecdote to this crazy fandom obsession after all.
Thanks for the link.I read the comments. I'm pleased about JW and IHJ, but I'm also puzzled and a bit upset. Was SG upset that the news got out about Maggie having her baby? I think once she was admitted to hospital it would have gotten out. She is a high profile person. From the the comments I read,I got the impression that Jake, Maggie and Peter were all upset about their personal lives being spied on and the everpresent pap stalking.I feel really bad about that. Glad she thinks JW and IHJ are responsible and respectful. Don't agree with her about DCforum, tho. They seem to be sweet people who mean no harm. As for gossip blogs, I sometimes read them, I admit. They seem mostly focussed on the usual suspects, like Paris, K-Fed, Jessica, Nicole and Lindsay Lohan. Borrrring! JustJared seems to be sort of tame compared to PerezHilton and a couple of others. And TMZ and Splash run the most intrusive pap stuff. Guess SG was upset that his news to Cantara flew thru the internet. But really, it wasn't anyone's fault except the paps. I saw pics of Peter and Maggie leaving for the hospital and pics of the going into the hospital admitting. That wasn't a result of SG it was just the paps being their vile selves.
I didn't see any pics of Maggie and Peter leaving for the hospital (kind of glad I didn't), and am sincerely hoping that they were able to experience this amazing event in their lives in as much peace as possible. That would be so hard to have strangers intruding on so personal an event. As much as I want to hear new news on them, and know that Ramona is doing well, I am glad that there has been radio silence on their going home and experiencing and enjoying the new miracle in their lives.
Me Too!!!
I purposely did not look for pics of Maggie and Peter going to the hospital. I think they should be left alone at this time. I want to see Ramona when they are ready to bring her out if ever. I hope they can avoid the vultures, not much chance of that I guess. I imagine , given her parents, that she is a beautiful baby.
Let's not discuss this further. People can get upset when other people intrude on their precious private moments, and they are entitled to made their feeling known, perhaps saying things in stronger terms than intended. It's not for us to turn it into a public debate and we should just let it slide. I would just agree however that the participants on the DC forum are on the whole nice people.
Speculation on Jake's love life and is actively encouraged on the DC Eyelashes thread though, and they do tend to enjoy it. His "serious" thread is much slower in comparison over there. I think there was a even recent poll about it even that had people campaigning. Harmless fun or not, if that in particular is what bothers Jake and makes him uncomfortable (seeing as Cantara lumped them in with WFT), then that may be why Jake Watch and IHJ is considered "better?"
Okay I'm just going to say this once because I can't figure out how to get on that blogsite that Cantera posts to to comment over there but Dave Cullen is a respected journalist and author who has spent considerably time and money propogating the belief that BBM was the most moving touchstone in recent cinema. He started it when no one was even really up on it. He brought together thousands and thousands of people across the world who have the movie in their souls and who deconstruct each scene and theme. The site has had interviews with Larry McMurtry, Diana Osana, and Annie Proulx. The day after the Oscars we organized a thank you ad in Variety magazine for the amazing movie, so ANYONE who thinks of The DC, my internet home as flabby and fucking sinister can kiss my ass!
Also, EVERY site gets their pics of Jake and family from the same place: IHJ. I love IHJ and Ally seems like a true sweetheart but how come they are responsible and the rest of us are shitheads?
Sounds like another "Get those pics I mistakenly posted on the internet off your site or else!" style cover up. Yah it's probably not wise to tell any site no matter how "respectable" and generally kick-ass, personal business about the celebrity family you have connections with. This is one goddamned bitch of an unsatisfactory situation. >:o(
IHJ is the same as Dave Cullen. It just skews younger. So is it that any conversation about this family that is not factory aproved gets the label as being sinister.
None of my ire is aimed at Brit or the Gyllenhaal family just anyone ignorant enough to lump the DC in with predatory sites. What happens when Brit or Ally steps out of line and allows something deemed *gasp* out of compliance with whatever rubric Cantera seems to be grading all the sites on? Will she get a stern warning like last time? Or will is there some test she must complete to fall back into the good graces? Blech!
Cantara criticizing the DC forum shows me she doesn't know what she is talking about because DC is a great site with some amazing fans of both the film and Jake. I don't see what's sinister about it at all. Quite the opposite. And despite its controversial subject matter, I don't think WFT is sinister or meanspirited either. I've seen more nastiness on some of the general gossip blogs, but that's unfortunately the case with most celebrities. It does sound like the gossip is bothering Jake more than I imagined though, and for that I feel sad.
My opinion of Cantara is somewhat diminished by all this crap. She is amazingly unsophisticated as far as the world of celebrity and blogdom and the internet go.
I mean for a "real, live New York publisher" she can't be totally isolated from reality. It's a baby not a secret.I don't blame Maggie, Peter and Jake, for being upset. Even celebrities are entitled to private family time. And I'm sure they would have formally announced the birth in their own time and their own way. But this is like closing the barn after the horse got out. Personally, I hate the fact that things are put into such a negative light giving an unbalanced impression to the family. There are people out here who adore the entire clan and aren't at all snarky and mean.
Let's give her the benefit of ths doubt - maybe Cantra's only reading of the DC blog was at a time when it had gone off on a rather personal tangent (and Adrian wasn't around to bring them into line!).
But I totally agree with the comments about WFT. On occasions there is a very nasty undertone to what is posted there, and a very inflexible attitude with regards to what they assume is fact.
Maybe the pap intrusion angers Jake because it worries the people he is photographed with?
But at the end of the day, from what I've read across the internet, bloggers almost unanimously write about Jake with great affection. I get the feeling this is her first in-depth encounter with the world of blogging (let's fact it - it's a whole new, out of control, aspect of the internet). But IMHO he seems to be one of the most widely liked celebs around. It's very sad if the whole family feel they can't do what they want to anymore because of the public attention, but that's the nature of celebrity in the age of the internet.
Don't agree with her about DCforum. but It is true there are some tinhats there. At first I was shocked. Maybe Cantara feel the same way.
I miss the days when "celebrity" wasn't the catchword to describe the famous. It used to be actor, singer, etc. What you did was what you were called first and foremost. What you were actually good for, had earned to some respect. IMO the lines have blurred too much to justify intrusion into people's lives. There needs to be a distinction made between celebrity for celebrity's sake (ie: the Paris Hilton type) and famous for the type of work they do (Jake). It irks me to see people paint those in the spotlight with the same brush as if deep down they're all just media whores first and foremost, integrity be damned. I think we'd agree Jake's fanbase would not be as big as it is if we all got the sense that's what he was.
Anon 8:39 a.m: You have a point there. A fanblog of Jake's, as WFT is, taking a gossip columnist's word as gospel on Jake's life... yeah, I could see how that might rub Jake the wrong way.
Cynicism and a feeling of entitlement over minute details of an actor's private life when you're on the outside looking in is one thing, but from the inside looking out (as Jake and his family are) it can seem weird at best coming from fans and downright obnoxious coming from gossips, I guess is what Cantara's saying. Maybe we could all take a deep breath and acknowledge that she has a valid point in there, even though airing it on a public blog was maybe not the most tactful route she could've taken.
I think her criticism of DC and WFT are wrong. She doesn’t have a clue. People that frequently comment in both sites are Jake’ fans. DC is a wonderful site and WFT can be controversial but is not mean spirited at all!
I mean to completely demean a fanbase like that is truly sad. Whatever the belief, people are still fans and that should be all that matters. IHJ is the biggest invasion of Jake's privacy ever! But no problem there. Only the sites that have a gay undertone are the flabby and sinister ones.
I have purchased Clpatrap but now I am questioning whether I'd like to support a comapny and author that associates with such a vile person.
and don't you all feel a slightly bit uneasy when you discuss jake shaving his legs in minute detail?
because i do, which of course won't make me stop, but i acknowledge that it's way uncomfortable for the person who's discussed.
i do not read gossip sites bcz i think it is shameful what they do to other people, no matter, jake or paris hilton.
9:34AM She's not a vile person - just, perhaps, the sort of person who "reacts" rather than "responds". The post on her blog seemed to be a mea culpa or "I'm sorry" directed at Stephen Gyllenhaal. So you certainly shouldn't be angry at the family if you don't agree with what she says. And she's definitely NOT as internet savvy as she thinks she is, otherwise she wouldn't have posted that message where anyone, anywhere in the world can see it. Someone should contact her and show her how to set up a locked livejournal ;-)
BTW, I certainly hope JW and IHJ got specific permission from her to post the news about the baby on the internet ...
When going through of Jake, or David Tennant, drought, Carmine is indeed my back up boyfriend. It's the accent that does it for me, and I too have rude thoughts about him and Flack...
Being of a rather short nature myself, I can even do my high heels and he'll still tower over me.
Going off on a bit of a whimsical tangent.... I see from the auction that Jake has size 11 (US) feet. Why do I fel better knowing that? Is it because I now know what size socks to get him for Christmas?
Hmm...David Tennant.
I love Heath but David's Casonnava was (a lot more) better.
Thanks for the support of the DC forums. It really is a great place, with lots of great people. And just for the record... Eyelashes is for fun. Most of the things that are written there are not meant to be taken seriously. We're just having fun - harmless fun - and we all love Jake. That's all it is.
The campaigning a couple of weeks ago was simply a way for some of our members to joke around with eachother (and get their post count up ;)). Don't take us seriously... (Unless we are serious. ;)) There are other, much more serious threads on the DC forums, if that's what you're after...
Holy fucking crap. Where do I start with this? I knew when this had reached over 60 comments you wouldn't all be discussing the charms of my beautiful Carmine (which by the way, is a very masculine, Italian name).
The DC hatred - I'm not sure where exactly it comes from but I remember being told by Cantara that the Gyllenhaal's first became aware of it with the Variety ad and that were pretty damn impressed. I'm trying to scour my brain for why this this opinion is harboured but I can't think right now. Mainly because I have MAN FLU!
I just don't know the history with this one.
I personally have much love for the DC because I know we get a reader crossover and everyone there has been fucking great about JW and pimped it to the max.
Okay, I'm going to take drugs - I'll be back soon.
When Jake goes MIA I've decided it would be best to get a 'back-up-imaginery-hot-actor-boyfriend'.
I think you should keep on looking!
Don't be rude!
Ennis and Jack never did it for you?? What a shock! It wouldn't surprise me if you would admit now that you actually like this Carmine fellow BETTER than Jake.
It must be that man flu you have now..please take some medicin!
I think Cantara appreciates JW and IHJ more and defends them all the way mainly because she keeps in touch with their owners,Ally and Brits. And this matters a lot, as she can see that they're,above all, very respectful to the Gyllenhaals. The dave cullen site may give the impression of inappropiate, but if you have the patience to look through the thread, you see that they're nice people.
From what I've seen, Cantara just tries to keep a balance, and means no harm to any of these fan sites.
I meant that at the anon above not you muffin, although I have to say the Eyelashes thread is a fun place and they gossip just as much as we do - can we help it?
....a long, long time ago, muffin...
It's been a very peaceful and funloving place the last couple of months... :)
1:38PM: Agreed. And I think Cantara was talking about the Jake eyelash thread not the entire site. The eyelash thread is mostly fluff but it has been infested with tinhats since day one including one of the mods, Adrian.
Oh dear. Just as I thought, some people will use this as an excuse to settle old score. Adrian is a perfectly fine person, but we don't know who you are anon 2.22, casting aspersion on someone most people liked, why not give us your name so we know to avoid you in other sites?
DC forum is perfectly good site, very occasionaly some posters stray over the line, but on the whole good. As for the Toothy site, the whole premise of the site is based on some nasty game of whispers and innuendos Ted Casablanca is playing, and many of the participants there make assumptions that make me feel uncomfortable, I don't think I can defend it.
I don't doubt that the participants at the lashers forum mean nothing but good but that doesn't mean that Jake would enjoy reading all they have to say about him and the other REAL people in his life.
Is there a fan site/blog that the object of admiration would enjoy reading? Of course not!
As "member" of both JW and DC I know that there are things said that Jake and his family wouldn't like to read. Arguing which site is more respectful towards Jake is silly and pointless.
2:45: Sweetie, this isn't an old score. What Adrian posts in public nad what he PM's people would make your skin crawl. He is definately unstable IMO and i'm frankly shocked he has been made a mod there. He's a misogynist, a tinhat and a Casablanca worshipper among other things. I'm sure Cantara saw somethings over there that made her uncomfortable.
wow. baby-gate seems even more controversial than picture gate. i hope cantara wasn't referring to anything serious when she mentioend poppa g being in the "doghouse"-- that sweet man has nothing but love for his family, and his birthday was the day after ramona's! he deserves to enjoy his granddaughter's birth fully.
re: DC, i agree that eyelashes is silly harmless fun, much like JW. from what i've seen (i haven't been there in ages), adrian is humorous yet respectful mod. i like cantara, but i'm not sure what she means by a fan site being "flabby"...

ms.darko, I assume then he PM you before? Please take your objections about Adrian to DC forum where he can defend himself rather than here. Most of what's written in the lashers thread are light-hearted, perhaps you can't differentiate what's jokey and what's serious?
3:45PM: I have forwarded the rather disturbing e-mails to Dave and hopefully they will be dealt with, just like the nasty e-mails Theresa from Heath Ledger Central recieved from the folks from the Lasher thread when she posted some things they didn't want to hear or when Dave had to intervene earlier this year and threatened to close the thread when some disgusting things were posted about the women Jake was photographed with.
I guess you weren't around then or yiu have a very selective memory and as i recall Adrian was involved with some of that as well and he "apoligized". He gets confused with reality and slash at times.
Originally I was planning on avoiding this shitstorm but as usual I'm just going to make a quick bulleted list.
1. I'm not entirely sure we should have seen what Cantara posted over there. I'm not entirely sure she knew someone would find it. As a so-called information expert - nothing on the internet is ever lost or hidden. I can (and have) seriously pulled up copies of webspaces that were published ten years ago that have been erased because none of it is lost and gone forever. [And we used that in a trial I was working on.]
2. Many years ago, possibly before some of you were born, (that's not a slight it was a long time ago) there were a group of fans that were fans of Keanu Reeves. A reporter "infultrated" a fan group, hung out with them in public and online and then wrote a psychological analysis of it. It royally pissed those people off but the article she wrote was mostly valid. Fandom attracts all types, from teenage girls, completely mentally unstable types to soccer moms. For an outsider it's hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. That doesn't make their opinions any less valid because an opinion is just that. An opinion is not meant to be taken as fact. There are times when the DC forum goes off topic and could make someone uncomfortable or rather the person being discussed uncomfortable.
[BTW - this Keanu shit was way before blogs. Correction, way before blogs had any power over mainstream publications. I know about it because I was a teenage girl at the time and watched it happen.]
3. Honestly, people go on and on about how Jake should have been ready for this the saying, "you think you know, but you have no idea" comes to mind. I think expecting it and watching it from the outside is wholely different than being the one talked about. When it gets to the point, as it hasn't for a lot of other actors but has for him, where people know your moves, know where you and your friends (who aren't actors) live, post real and fictional accounts of your every action and these things are being discussed ad nauseum and crossing over into mainstream publications - it's got to make one paranoid or a bit miffed. I suppose a general rule is not to say anything about someone else that you wouldn't mind being discussed about yourself. People will say all sort of shit online that they wouldn't say face to face. They feel that they're protected. Of course in this case the discusssion about yourself tends to be magnified way beyond all comprehension and now the shit is making it in major magazines.
Brit, get some rest, drink plenty of fluids and finally get a humidifier if you're congested. I'm visiting my parents in Pittsburgh and catching up on the Sienna Miller shit. Dear God, help that girl.
Great post, girl friday - I think you've hit the nail on the head. You too, Simon.
I have also had eight cups of tea and a cartoon of juice so I'm well lubricated.
Had some word back from Cantara. Not sure if she wants this spread around but I think it might explain a few things. Cantara made that post on her blog because she is starting to catalogue her correspondances with Stephen Gyllenhaal - she loves reading them back and too because, I say, they are both extermely talented writers and pretty darn cool people and I imagine their world of emailing is interesting stuff.
She means to get the place password protected and prehaps naively, didn't expect some roving Jake fan to come across the place so soon.
Cantara is a Stephen fan - she loves Stephen to bits and whilst she respects Jake and all the Gyllenclan her priority is Stephen.
The internet is a crazy, crazy world for me some days.
I love Cantara and I love the Eyelashers and I love Jake and I love Stephen.
And above all, I love tea. So I'm going to get another brew.
There are times when the DC forums gets off topic and says something a celeb is not comfortable with. And? That makes it different from every other site ever dedicated to a celeb how exactly? Eyelashes is mostly populated by older women with husbands and families. The site is a diverse mix of people. The movie deeply effected A LOT of people. I think that when celebs start to pick and choose who they want as fans (NOT SAYING THAT THIS IS WHAT THIS IS) it's a messy business. But yah, holding up one site as being Ok but another as being "sinister" (unless there is really some sinister shit going on)is thoroughly insulting and out of pocket. The DC has done so much for that movie. The makers even agree or they wouldn't agree to provide interviews with the staff. I guess I'm upset mostly because these people are my extended family. We're all so different but we're all united in our love for this heart wrenching movie. I spent hundreds of dollars the other weekend going to a big party across the country to meet 40+ of my fellow DCians. They are normal. sweet, beautiful people. We watched the movie togetheer. We cried together. We had so much fun together and to have that catagorized as sinister is putting me close to tears now. There are two places on the site where I couls see Jake (et al) getting squirmy about. Eyelashes (which come on, any man that takes 1000000 studio pictures looking like The sexiest sex that ever did sex is not going to blanch when said pics are drooled over by soccar moms and college students.) and the part of the forum foks can't get to unless your a member and that's Slash. Slash is par of the interweb's DNA at this point. There is CSI Slash. There is LotR, Smallville, Buffy/Angel, and the mama of it all Star Trek. No celeb should even bat an eye. If you are good looking man someone will slash you or your character with another man. Period. We're no more depraved than many people on the net.
But 98% of the site is NOT Lashers or Slashers. The DC started a campaign to get a copy of BBM in every rural and small library in the counrty. They are writing a book about how the movie effected members. Some members whole lives have changed due to the movie. That's the type of sinister shit we do over there. *rolls eyes* It just aint right. I'll stop now. I just don't want anyone under the mistaken impression that any site is superior to the The DC or that the DC is harboring loons and crazies hell bent on Gyllengaard distruction.
One more thing, re: those studio shots, The DC is one place on the web that I go for my Jakey fix where his studio work is more the norm than hip pap shots. Most pap shots come into play after we get them from here or IHJ.
I'm just sick about this whole thing. :o(
I, too, would like to defend Dave Cullen's Web site. Cantara should spend a little more time exploring it, without confining herself to the sites for fans of the "Brokeback" actors. It's a huge place, like a solar system, full of groups having discussions on all sorts of topics. There's a lot of social activism there. There are serious movie fans visiting. There are thought-provoking discussions of gender. There are book clubs going on. There are extremely literate & detailed discussions of all aspects of "Brokeback Mountain" as a work of art. To dismiss this all on the basis of a few posts, or perhaps a personality or two whom Cantara perhaps doesn't care for, is quite unfair. I wish she were more specific about what caused her to make that judgment, and I wish that she had taken it up at the Cullen forum or spoken to someone there privately.
I'm no longer a member of the Cullen site, but that's because, after participating there well past 1,000 posts & advocating for the movie in any way I could, from Nov. 2005 to about May 2006, it just seemed time to go. It was out on DVD, the fight seemed to be over. And also, since my own personal fantasy is Jake with a female (and in saying this, I am making no judgment on other fantasies, or implying any such judgment -- I'm merely setting forth my own taste, like a liking for coffee ice cream), JakeWatch seemed a little closer to what I was looking for. Also, I'm trying to meet my daily irony quotient. I enjoy squealing over Jake periodically, as a nice break from long hours on the laptop doing my job. Actually, I respect him as a serious actor. I wouldn't ever stalk him. In fact, I'd be rendered speechless & paralyzed with shyness if I met him. Any verbal lusting that I do here is only for my own & hopefully everyone else's amusement.
And I admire the whole herd of Gyllenhaals. That's a big part of Jake's appeal for me. I love my own family, but they aren't quite so liberal or interested in social causes or tolerant of artistic expression among their progeny. So probably I've idealized the Gyllenhaals a little too much as a creative, socially aware entity. I am sorry they are discomfited by the Internet's fascination with them.
ms. darko - I don't read all the post on the lashers thread (stay away for a week and you would have missed thousands). All I can say is that I haven't read anything objectionable from Adrian, and from my own experience on the internet, some people simply can't read other posts in the way it was meant to be read. I've written here (as one of the anons) and other places posts which are not to be taken seriously, but was nevertheless taken as serious by some. So they get concerned, offended, outraged, startled, whatever. Just one of those things, and I'd be inclined to give Adrian the benefit of doubt given what I have read of his posts. You should too.
Ok, could someone explain to me just how Dave Cullen's site is different than JakeWatch and I Heart Jake?
I adore all three sites (don't really post at any of them, though) and I'm really curious as to why JW and IHJ are the good sites and DC's site is bad. I see pretty much the same content all around.
Of course, I'm relatively new to Gyllenfandom so maybe I've missed something.
without confining herself to the sites for fans of the "Brokeback" actors.
But isn't this an entire blog about an actor? What exactly is the problem with the actor threads over at the DC that anyone could call sinister... or flabby. Whatever the fuck that last is supposed to mean?
I guess it really just boils down to what Stephen said in his Q&A try to focus more on your lives and leave the internet fandom for a bit to gain perspective. Feeling dijected, insulted, and disrespected is a helluva way to gain said perspective but in a weird way maybe I should be thanking Cantara for opening my eyes to what celebs/celebrity hangers on think of folks who have a genuine affection for a celebs.
I mean you hold it in the back of your mind like "I'm sure such and such thinks his fans are loons!" but to have such an off-hand comment be made and then defended by other fans is the shock of cold water across the face that puts things in perspective.
I think Jake genuinely appreciates his fans. I think the whole concept of blogdom has been distorted in Cantara's mind and conflated with fandom in a way that suggests there are sinister elements in play everywhere and she's making some feeble attempt to "analyze" which are the 'good' ones and which aren't. I think Jake's people, his publicist, manager, etc. and Maggie and Peter's people will balance out the negative impressions given by some misguided, uninformed person who may not mean any harm, but has caused some harm. Because of Jake's celebrity, I think Stephen, Naomi, and his friends have been subjected to a level of scrutiny they never expected. While Mum and dad have been in the business forever, they never expected the internet to confer a level of notoriety they are now experiencing. And I also think that Jake and his family and friends have had some really ugly experiences with the paps and with stalker tpyes since BBM.I'm not surprised they've become wary and would get upset about certain things.Anyone would. But to exploit their concerns, albeit inadvertently is misguided and really sad. I think the professionals who manage their careers will put things in better perspective. You can love someone to bits and be protective of them and still not act in their best interests. Happens all the time. It's about judgement.
the bbm fandom is the only one i know that allows real people slash. in all the ther places i saw it is only characters slash and it is usually stated explicitly.
it makes even me uncomfortable, so i'm not surprised that it may make the people in question squirming
the bbm fandom is the only one i know that allows real people slash.
That's not true. Also The BBM fandom is not a tribunal. No one "allows" anything. People write what they want to write.
The DC does not allow quotes from RPS in people's posts. The DC actually has a battery of rules one must follow. It is a professionally run and comprehensive site.

ok, but the mods or owners of the other sites usually do not allow it, delete the RPS stories.
Well one would have to take that up with The Live Journal communities and personal journals that have the RPS in them, not The DC, kaydee.
Squallcloud,
i didn't mean DC forum in particular, only the fact that the Gyllenhaal family have a good reason not to like the internet in general - i agree that Cantara didn't make any distinction between different sites... but perhaps it doesn't matter to them, only the fact that Jake's private life is dissected very thouroughly on the net.
i don't want to criticise, only wondering why they may feel like that.
Stephen responded her letter but it is password protected.
I've been over to DC and come out of the woodwork there to express my solidarity with the Lashers. DC has done a marvellous thing for the BBM community and I'd like them to have the recognition for that. I'd hate to see them tarred with the same brush as JustJared and the like. They don't deserve it.
i agree that Cantara didn't make any distinction between different sites...
I'm really not trying to be argumentative I do love it over here but actually yes she did. JW and IHJ (incidentally the people she spilled the beans to) were deemed holy and The DC was deemed sinister and flabby. I admit I really do need to get back on the Nutrasystems and lose some weight but I don't think my flabbiness is any business of hers and the only "s" word I and DCians can be accused of is sycophancy.
There is a dif between JustJared and D-Listed and a blog like Trent's (pink is the new blog) or The Guilded Moose or Defamer. The last three love "dreamy eyed dream boat" Jake and are brazen in their love. Same with JW, same with Eyelashes/DC.
... defended by other fans is the shock of cold water...
You didn't aim this at anyone in particular but lets get something straight. The only side I'm on is my own because at the end of the day that's the only physical, real, within my grasp person I have to answer to, not counting that guy hovering behind me claiming to be my boyfriend. My-own-self is being forced to go square dancing later and I'm not particularly happy about that. [Just sharing.] I can't wait until this vacation in hell is over.
I think people would be more considerate of what the hell they are writing in the first place, if the knew their name and web address would be attached to such comments!...
As I said above, agreed for a thousand other reasons I won't go into here.
PS I spent the last hour + writing this so I'm sorry if I hadn't read the postings during that time
... and you deserve an ice cream cone and a Kewpie doll. Take care, sweetie.
I'm going to put on a scrunchie now and attempt to repair a toilet because being originally from Pennsylvania, where the men are men and so are the women, I can do these sorts of things.
I love visiting home!
Help ... me ...
Holy crap. I swear my head is spinning from (trying) to read all the comments here. But I give up now. I'm lost.
Just let it go now, please?
Now if you'll excuse me I have to go and take an aspirin.
Simon, I hear you but her first reaction was to jump all over Brit's shit about those photos that SHE leaked. THEN, she got some sense and backtracked.
Someone over at the DC was like I guess the reason your're (me) so upset is because you love JW and visit regularly. Because this other DC poster had not been here she couldn't care less about what some random thinks about Dave Cullen. I'm just a bit miffed at so many people coming up with reasons why Dave Cullen the man and davecullen the site woudl be lumped in with disreps like JJ but then many of you don't visit there I take it and can't know the immense awesomeness of DC.
Additionally I will freely admit, I am the person who posted the baby news over at the DC. I didn't know it was some secret note being passed at the back of the class. I figured it was good news all fans could partake in. If it were an exclusive I'm thinking it woudl have been kept under raps.
My bad. I mean I never got warm fuzzies about Cantera anyway. I was happy how everything turned out from the first kerfuffle but my first impression of her was always in the back of my mind so I guess that's why no benefit. No doubt.
But then what does she care? She has the ear of the Gyllenhaals's and I am impotent to do or say anything against the slander that she chooses to put out about a most reverent and respectful fan site.
Can't we get a jump on the Sunday project?
*sniffles, wipes eyes*
I'm feeling the love Brits!
could we measure the whole cantara-and-site-criticising thing on the gyllenscale? :)
where 'having to discuss it any more' is 0 and 'lets discuss marie-antoinette's premiere' is... like... 5 ?
Once again some anonymous with the desire to spread exciting "news" decided to post the address to what was CLEARLY a personal letter between Cantara and Mr. Gyllenhaal...
How can letter published on the Internet site be considered private?
I've never had the occasion to meet the woman but I've had the occasion to be insulted by her so hence the difference of opinion.
Thanks Brit for visiting 'lashes. {hugs} NOW in the spirit of moving on... since I've deemed myself protector of the DC's rep or some such (WTF?) ...
I do like the Zodiac movie poster even without a pic of our beautiful boy, but I NEED a trailer like yesterday! It is as important to me as it is to the studio that they get it out before the new year so that we can possibly see Jake doing the Oscar press cha-cha again. :o)
I think if Cantara saw you defending DC with such passion, squall she would look again. Like I've said, I don't know DC too well but I trust squall to tell me the board is happy, fun place and I know some of the other DCers too and you're all cool beans in my book.
And a Sunday Project? Man! I'm ill! Let me think...what aspect have I not covered yet...
Sorry Simon, but I still don't get your point. If the letter was indeed private she would send it by e-mail.
Millions of blogers share their very private thoughts every day. The fact that they publish them on the Net makes them public. Same applies to this case.
Plan B? Oh, sorry, forgot that's what this thread is about. Chris O'Donnell (don't laugh, I like cute boys) and Peter Krause (of six feet under). It'll be heaven if they ever get together in a film.
How about Zach Braff?
His father is of Russian heritage :)
Biohazard,
I'm with you, Peter Krause gets my vote as well. That boy is adorable!!! (Even if he is a grown-ass man) lol
Zach Braff is alright although I find Mandy Moore hotter. Mandy Moore is my girl crush - actually I have many girl crushes these days. Maybe I should do a top ten of each and then get it laminated and then Jake can do the same and if either of us bump into our Top Ten it's okay for us to have sex with them and for it not to be considered cheating....
...although I will have to 'okay' Jake's top tens.
...and what the hell is 'tooty'?
"cutey-tootey" - well, I never. Is that bad?
let's leave 'cutey-tooty' aside and think about the 'girl' part. doesn't that make you feel nice? so rejuvenating...
i wouldn't mind being called cute too...
I like the idea of being a flower in the Court of Gyllenhaal but I'm more gin-soaked hag that got let in by mistake and has now passed out in the corner.
The internet is a scary place - I think Cantra has discovered that in a hurry! Remember the denial published in the New York Daily News re Jake? That only came about because someone must have heard something about a Gyllenhaal "announcement", got the wrong Gyllenhaal (this happened on the same day that Maggie's pregnancy/engagement were officially announced); and extrapolated (perhaps deliberately and scurrilously) that the announcement related to that oh-so-popular topic that is discussed ad-nauseam on a certain "dentist" site. Within 24 hours of the first post, it was in print in an NY paper.
If you post something on the internet, someone, somewhere with an interest in what you write is likely to find it within minutes. That the nature of the internet age.
BTW, there was an interesting court decision in the US last week relating to an huge damages award given to a person who was defamed in a blog. I know where I work, part of the conditions of employment is that I don't use the work PC to post messages on a blog or messageboard. Your posts CAN be traced (by IP address, which is fixed on broadband connections). So there's really no such thing an anonymous anymore. And something said maliciously but "anonymously" may just catch up with you (not that that happens here or at IHJ or DC!)
Can you tell I find the whole business of the uncontrolled nature of the internet fascinating?!?! It's a wonderful, terrible thing.
And yes, the irony that I'm posting as Anonymous hasn't been lost on me ;o)
11:37PM:That Daily News denial back in April wasn't because of the "denist" and his fan fic but because ok Michael K, the blogger at D-Listed. He posted that bogus coming out story on his blog and said a "reader" e-mailed him the "news". He claimed at the time he didn't believe it but posted it anyway. He tehn e-maile it to some intern at the Daily News that he knew and they went with it, blaming the rumor on "gay blogs" and wishful thinking on their part. I know this because I know people at the Daily news and they gave me the 411 on sleazy Michael K.
I may be talking out of turn here because I don't know Cantara (obviously) but am I the only who finds her actions odd and a wee bit immature?
Now, please correct me on any of this if I'm wrong, but first, Stephen Gyllenhaal relates to her the news that his granddaughter has been born. If the Gyllenhaal camp is upset over her subsequent actions, then I would think its safe to say the news was not meant for the public (but I will admit I'm just assuming that) But she then chooses to not only put it on her site, but chooses to pass it on to not only JW but IHJ as well, where is then picked up by other places, including Just Jared, where it happens to be seen by someone from US weekly. The only one I see at fault here, so far, is Cantara, for sharing the information.
Now, US Weekly contacts her for confirmation and after rejecting them, she gives JW and IHJ the email and requests that they email the contact from US Weekly with 'strongly worded protests', a highly unprofessional move in my book, particularly since she is the source of the original news leak.
Then she posts a private email to Stephen Gyllenhaal. Now, I'm not going to comment on whether or not its right that we read it or even question how it was found, the fact is, it's on the internet, not password protect, it was not private. And in this email, she disparages a portion of Jake's fanbase and the entire post seems to be geared toward exonerating her, to raising herself (and JW and IHJ) in Stephen Gyllenhaal's eyes.
And then, after going on to Stephen Gyllenhaal about Dave Cullen's place and how sinister it is, etc, etc and knows that people are all in an uproar about it, she then chooses to password protect Stephen's response to her.
Rather immature in my book.
2;39AM: I'm glad that his response has been password protected, enough already. She has contacted Dave Cullen and apoligized and it sounds like she will issue an apology to the forum as well. I don't know what led her to lump DC with the rest of the sleazy forums. All I can figure is that she saw the Jake eyelash thread and objected to something on there and was not commenting on the whole site.
My post was written before I knew Cantara apologized. Since I don't know how (or even if its possible) to delete my comments, I'll ask that they just be ignored.
There's a little trash can at the bottom of your posts, kdk. You can click on it to erase if that's what you want to do ... Okay had a full evening of work came back and all was well again. If Dave is happy, I'm happy. Dave's a great guy.
Okay so nobody is feeling me on the Jonathan Rhys Meyers Plan B?
Okay, not every man I love is such a girl, let's see. I also like Dave Navarro ... right. Okay I also love Jared Leto. FUCK! Okay manly man, manly man ... AH! I would merrily have Idris Elba's babies.

kdk, your summation about handles it. And i read Dave Cullen's report on her apology. She claimed that she said these things months ago??? Did i read that correctly? How is that possible since all this dust up surrounds the birth of the grandchild, that certainly wasn't months ago.I certainly don't want to condemn Cantara at all. But frankly, if she wants things to calm down, and go away, she ought to just keep it simple and apologize. Make it short and sweet and try not to get in trouble over-explaining things.
I think this has been a very instructive experience for her. Jake's fanbase has translated into greater support for his entire family. Lots of Jake fans bought Stephen's book. Not critical, perhaps, but certainly helpful. And who here ever heard of Cantara's publishing house before Stephen? From a purely business perspective, she really ought to exercise some judgement before she starts categorizing Jake's fansites.
Anon 6.36, for most of us adults, there will come a point in our social intercourse when we should consider a matter closed. That is when someone apologised, however inadequate you think that apology may be. Unless it is a matter of such great importance that you can't leave it be, and most of us here don't think that this is the case here.
Proof that, once again, it's not easy to be a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal. (Though it's much, mucher easier than being a fan of, say, Michael Jackson.)
How to tell at a glance whether the sh*t has hit the fan at JakeWatch -- or -- The Various Tempests in the Teapot Among Jake Fans:
1) A week has gone by & no arguments among the blog visitors have broken out. (Seems to occur in seven-day increments -- maybe we can chart this against the phases of the moon?)
2) Between one's visits to the blog, the comment count listed at the bottom of a fairly innocuous post on JakeWatch explodes from 45-51 or so comments to 80-100 or more comments.
3) Jake fandom is definitely like a religion -- as all religions are subject to schisms among the devoted as they argue over points of doctrine or which particular church they prefer to worship in, even as all agree about the divinity of the subject they are worshipping.
4) At the end, there are mostly kisses and hugs and apologies, and everyone once again unites in gazing with adoration at Jake and/or the Gyllenhaals.
Brit, I take back my post stating that I accept no substitute for the Original Gyllenhaal. I agree, you must keep posting about these alternative guys & measuring them on the Jake meter. Perhaps we do need a break in the form of a backup who's a little easier on his fans.
Ahh! But if he is truly worthy of worship, how can he be "easy"?
And the Forum responds with a resoundingly delicious dose of Jake love ....:)
That's classy ...

Frankly, I'm bored with the whole cantara thing.
Time to get back to 'worshiping the ground' Jake walks on!
