well said, anon—i particularly like that your line reminds me of a maggie quote from a new yorker interview. i love that part of article, where she chides jake a bit after his little joke, by saying, “there’s no irony in print”. it's prolly one of my favorite articles on the gyllenhaal siblings, not because it's particularly flattering, but it seems like such an honest portrayal of their big sis-lil bro relationship and banter. they’re cute and funny and smart and witty, and seem not to take themselves too seriously.

Viewing these pics before going to bed kind of makes you think about the dream you'll have..and I was SO excited! BUT. As usual,something has to go wrong and spoil Jake&Heath paradise,doesn't it!A f***** fly! Forget for the moment that this blog is mainly about writing, creativity and community, and not really about Jake at all (acc to BPB's statement of intent ages ago).
Then consider the fact that as self-confessed Jake Watchers, we come here to drool over him, talk about him and claim him as our own (remember the Valley Girl fight on PG's watch last Sunday?)
So how come the sight of him photoshopped with Heath makes us collectively melt into puddles of delight? I've been a bit divided in my loyalties - I take my obsession with Jake/Heath over to the DC thread and LJ RPS ... never dreaming that here on JW there would be so many who seem to share it. I kinda thought that most of us here would prefer to see Jake with (say) one of us gals, not with (say) Heath, as he is pictured here.
And this question is NOT, repeat NOT about Jake's preferences, it about us Jake Watchers preferences, before anyone gets the wrong end of the stick ...
I know exactly why I like seeing Jake with Heath, even though by the force of my own natural impulses, I'm most fond of imagining Jake with women. Well, actually, with one particular woman [*Cough*cough* me]. Because seeing Jake & Heath united & laughing & in love gives me the happy, conventional ending "Brokeback Mountain" did not provide. I would not cheapen the emotional force of that masterpiece of a story by changing the ending in any way. But it's a tragedy. And on some level, I think everyone who loved the movie has to cope with that. And it's heartening to imagine that, in "real life," things turned out differently.
I suspect that also impels a lot of the fantasizing about Jake with other men. And maybe why some seized upon a male love interest for Jake in "real life" so eagerly. We all want things to turn out better for him than they did in the movie.
I think i kind of agree, niceanonymous. BBM really was heartbreaking. I know I've enjoyed some of the well written slash about Jack and Ennis because it sort of changes the outcome. My favorite, right now is Montana Crow's Journal. It's a masterpiece!
Anonymous 7:18, for me, the tragic ending of "Brokeback Mountain" was also, in part, what left me unhappy when the Academy Awards ceremony ended earlier this year. (Aside from the Academy's homophobia & cowardice.) On some level, I believed that, if only the movie won the most important awards, if only Jake & Heath were recognized for their fine work, then the tragedy depicted by the story wouldn't have been in vain. Like, damn it, those characters suffered so much, they deserved ... something ... like a Golden Guy statuette ... to make it up to them. That's not rational, but that's how I felt.
it was like a fantasy came true, some inner wounds healed, some thirst quenched, or some desires satisfied, when i first saw these two pics and thought they were real.
one of the reasons for my undescribable feelings (after my retrospective analysis) is that: I WAS SOOO GLAD THAT JAKE WAS SOOO WELL LOVED AND CHERISHED, as in the pics he's obviously the protected side. and in a way, i believe a man can show his vulneralbility (let's face it, they are vulnerable beings like women, if not more) better with a male lover, as a man is expected to play the strong and protective role in a heterosexual relationship and therefore can less express freely his weaknesses.
my joyous satisfaction came from deeps of my heart.. but then soon it's flattened.. sigh. cheated again by my wishful thinking.
but i PRAY that someday someone would love jake the way it should be, since i can't do it myself.. sigh.
