Thanks to blackhatnbeard for finding this article: Academy Invites 120 to Membership. Jake got in!
Excited as I am by this because surely it means Jake Watch: The Movie will be a shoo in next March, I'm very confused as to the whole Academy set up. I thought you had to win an Award to get in? Obviously not. And not to take the gleaming tint off Jake's fabulous news but they blatantly seem to let in anyone whose ever been within three feet of a film set - Amy Adams? And who in sam hill is Barry Pepper?
Anyways, good luck with it Jake. Do they have robes like The Stonecutters? A special number through to the emergency services?

Dakota Fanning played the little girl in Taken (I think it was called Taken - the Steven Spielberg TV series about alien abduction). She was good I thought. Interesting to see which actors aren't members yet.
BWAH! The Stonecutters. "Who made Steve Guttenburg a staaaar? We did! We DIIID!" If Steve Guttenberg gets in the bloom has definately left the rose. I think anyone nominated or any winner gets in right? Amy Adams and Jake and Heath were nominated so there ya go. What was Dakota nominated for?
Dakota Fanning is one of the most annoying child actresses today. In my own humble opinion.
I don't think she was nominated this year, or any other year for that matter, was she??
hi
I love Police Academy ;)
for some reason i find it adorable that heath & jake both joined the club now. together-like.
I'm really delighted! Actually, this is a real honor and it seems to be an acknowledgement that there are two guys out there who should have won Oscars and except for the old farts who wouldn't see the movie and didn't vote for them, they would have won. So now, they can get little Dakota and a few more, a run those old farts into a retirement village...and as someone who is going to be an old fart one day, I think that's a good thing. Time for "the academy" to join the 21st Century!
Hey, check out these great biking pics of Jake with Lance Armstrong and Matthew McConaughey! This is part of the other bike pictures and Jake's shirt is clearly red, not pink. He looks even better here, imo. I love the chest pics but this makes the whole outfit look better!! http://www.x17online.com/blog/archive/2006/july/06/article/day-two-of-tour-de-jake-and-lance-is-taking-the-lead/.
As for the Oscar invite, yeah it is actually an honor and he seems to be in great company this year (but Dakota Fanning and not Michelle Williams...wtf?!?). I thought they automatically invited whoever was nominated but that isn't the case. They randomly invite people. Maggie is already a member but hasn't ever been nominated. I mean look at who is just now getting in, Joaquin Phoenix, David Stathairn? They should have been in a while ago. The fiasco with BP last year was horrible but this membership will allow Jake to vote for quality films and not have any more embarrasements.
Dakota Fanning is what? 8? How the hell is she going to know how did the best cinematography, etc, etc??
I also thought that AMPAS routinely invited the previous year's nominees, along with some additional people who were recommended by members & etc. I can't imagine Jake replying with anything but a gracious acceptance. He's a smooth guy, our Jake, and nowhere near as prickly in his principles as, say, Sean Penn.
I'd consider this more of an honor if I really thought of AMPAS as a serious arts organization whose awards actually meant something. Really, AMPAS is an odd hybrid of PR/corporate mandate/crafts guild/actors group. Yes, there are some serious, well-intentioned people involved in this narcissistic entity. But unfortunately, it's also a lot like a branch of Hollywood High School, where popularity counts more than anything, and it often displays all the shallow boosterism of a provincial local Rotary Club.
Oh, brit. Dakota is like 12 now (hello?) and has already had her first fling with some dude in her elementary school class. She is clearly mature enough to handle one of the most prestigious awards in film. Actually, I shouldn't be so flippant. I'm sure she'd be a more responsible voter than most of the corporate losers who make up an indecent percentage of the voting base.
But who cares?? The real news that we're all getting Oscars next year!! Woo hoo!! :)
Are they allowed to votes in the categories they don't belong in? Don't actors vote for actors, etc - except for Best Pic which is voted on by everyone?
And who in sam hill is Barry Pepper?
Oooo, I love Barry Pepper! He's a great actor, imo, but one that's still flying under the radar. Wish more people would discover his talent!
Congrats, Jake! Altho, I'm not the biggest fan of AMPAS (stodgy old coots!) I do still think it's cool he (AND Heath!) were offered membership.
Barry Pepper sounds like an alias George Clooney might use to check into hotels.
^^ LMFAO!
Wasn't Barry Pepper the guy in Saving Private Ryan who was the really good sharpshooter who prayed before each kill? And I think he played Roger Maris, the Yankee slugger, in a bio-pic. He was also in Tommy Lee Jones' movie the Three Burials of Whathisname, last year. At least I think so. They seem to be leaning towards people who've done lots of indies.Except for Dakota. I'm glad Eric Bana got in. Except for Jakey, there are a couple of Aussies I've got the hots for. Well, three: Heath, Eric and Hugh Jackman. Now that's a party. And no, you're not invited!
I think Michelle Williams' filmography is a bit slender right now. That's gonna change very quickly and she'll be joining Heath within the next two or three years. Mark my words. Isn't she signed to play Charlotte Bronte soon in a story about the sisters? That could be her big (Oscar) moment!
Barry Pepper was in Saving Private Ryan, the bio-pic was 61* (produced by Billy Crystal) about Roger Maris and he was also in the Green Mile, Knockaround Guys and We Were Soliders.
He is a great talent and someone that very few people know about. Hopefully that will change.
....
......
But he is still no Jake!
*Rubs hands in glee*
Good news indeed and count me in for the Barry Pepper fan club. He was fantabulous in the criminally underrated, Spike Lee directed 25th Hour, one of the first films post 9/11 which also starred Ed Norton, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jake's 'This is our youth' co-star Anna Paquin, herself a (very young) recipient of the Accademy Award, back in 93.
"The real news that we're all getting Oscars next year!! Woo hoo!! :)" Goes off to write speech.
Heath got in too!
Heath belongs there as does Jakey! I wonder. Is Clooney a member? He certainly should be. Sometimes, I think that when Jakey grows up, he wants to BE George Clooney. And I think that George Clooney wants to BE Jakey. Anybody remember the shot of Clooney crushin' on Jakey at BAFTA when Jakey was making his acceptance speech? There's real affection there. YO, George! You need to find a spot for Jakey in your Ocean's 13 picture. He'd be splendid in a caper film.

OMG! I've just been inspired! If Clooney were to put Jakey in Ocean's 13, I've got just the thing. How about if Jakey is like an assistant (kind of a nerdy, naive, resolute bumbler, who thinks he's on top of things.) to the evil mean Andy Garcia character. And he inadvertently ends up helping Ocean's crew. Becomes friends with Ocean, bcz he doesn't know the history. And Ocean sends these girls to compromise Jakey, and get info from him and he keeps getting seduced...just a guy who can't say no! I think it would be hilarious. And would give fresh life to a floundering franchise, bcz Ocean's 12 wasn't all that. It ends with Jakey becoming one of Ocean's crew.
AMY ADAMS IS A RESPECTED ACTRESS WHO WAS NOMINATED FOR AN ACADEMY AWARD LAST YEAR.
