ACTUAL BEHIND THE SCENES ACTION

There have been times whilst manning the good ship Jake Watch that I've been moderately to massively freaked out by situations I've found myself in. This time last week was one of those, 'Holy Jesus, Mary and Joseph! How the frig did that happen?' moments and things got pretty hectic at JW HQ. Yeah, I managed to get Us Weekly on my case.

Due to Jake Watch's exclusive reveal of baby Gyllengaard's arrival, muggins here got slightly embroiled with the senior editor of said mag and was given an alarming insight into the world of the 'Big Bad Media' (Cantara's phrase) and can I just say to you all now - never ever believe a fucking thing you read anywhere.

Cantara forwarded me the email that the senior editor sent and said it might be fun for us all to email him back and tell him not to pry into other people's lives. Here is the email:

Hello,

I understand that Mr. Gyllenhaal has released a statement about his new granddaughter Ramona through Cantara Books. Can u pls forward me the statement?

Bradley Jacobs
Senior Editor, Us Weekly
1290 Ave. of the Americas, 2nd Floor
New York, NY 10104

Now, at first I thought he was only doing his job and maybe I shouldn't get involved but could I help myself? No. So I emailed Mr Jacobs and explained that Cantara had simply shared news given to her by her friend (who okay, happens to be Stephen Gyllenhaal) and that it was in no way an official statement.

Mr Jacobs emailed me back saying he was confused. So I repeated myself and added that I presumed the info came from IHJ. Mr Jacobs emailed me back (we're like, best friends by this point) and said no, he got his info from JustJared. Oooo! Interesting!

JustJared claimed on their 'exclusive' that they got the info from a source close to the family. They then told me they got it from an anonymous email. So where did they get Cantara's role in it from to pass onto Us Weekly? Cos they either got it from here or IHJ, ergo not making it in any way an exclusive and more a lie but whatever, that's not my concern.

Anyway, here is the email from Mr Jacobs:

we saw it on just jared. i think it's weird that a publisher forwarded a request from an editor to a fanblog. but thanks for expalining

Look, dude. You've had this explained to you three times by this point. I also like to say that Mr Jacobs used that colour blue in his emails and seemed to dislike capital letters.

I'd just like to say: Us Weekly - I think you're weird.

So, that's how they operate - I could have told them anything and part of me wishes I had just to see it in print in this week's copy of Us Weekly. Although I would have used my pseudonym; Crystal Shandy Lear.

In other news, I think the 6th month anniversary of Jake Watch was somehow overshadowed and we should celebrate again with a little 'me' time - more details to follow.

Good for you Brits... Just shows that you're the one with the finger on the pulse and these losers are in your wake. You're right - we're all ready for the party - the 6th month anniversairy of the best log on the net!

PS
...when i said log ... I didn't mean log...You're nothing like a log...

Hahaha..the man can't accept that he lost! When he will write true stories, with true talent and be an open-hearted fellow, maybe then people will share the news with him, too! Until then,I guess he will remain in the fiction world, along with the other "journalists".

So the "esteemed" US Weekly gets it's info from fan blogs and third-party celebrity sites on the 'net?! What the sam hill ever happened to JOURNALISM?! As in get off your butt, outa your office, and track down the stories. Geesh...no wonder I never buy that stupid magazine.....

this here blog-reader is confused. don't people - even editors - understand plain English?

and may i add, frankly: much ado about nothing... or what?

weird...

So I guess he was a little annoyed that Cantara sent the announcement to Jake Watch and IHJ (I thought that Just Jared got it from here and IHJ). Why is he getting his undies in a knot? Maggie's "People" eventually sent out a formal announcement to the press and obviously Stephen Gyllenhaal wanted the folks at Jake Watch and IHJ to get the wonderful news first or he wouldn't have ok'd Canatara sharing the newS!

Oh i say!

Exactly ~dkbb~, what happened to journalism?!
Oh my...

britpopbaby said...

I think he was just trying to get info out of Cantara and then out of me but he totally didn't go about it in the right way.

His initial email to Cantara was a demand - like she owed him a statement or something.

Nothing Really Matters said...

Brits I think you should have him terminated!

That is SO weird and so hysterical. I wonder. What are the qualifications to securing such a prestigeous and high-paying position at US Weekly?
I think that it's hilarious that having the full weight and 'power' of his magazine behind him, he's reduced to scouring the internet for gossip blogs and fan sites, etc. As if I needed another excuse! All my illusions are now thoroughly and sufficiently shattered. La la La.

Now, that's an interesting insight into journalism... I totally enjoyed how he strung together the whole story of an official 'statement' from a few snippets of information. Investigative huh?

this guy is a class act. in one poorly written line, he a) calls himself an editor while shunning capitalization or spell check b) attempts (unsuccessfully) to put himself (“mr. senior editor”) on a higher level than BP, because she’s just a “fanblog”—idiot! c) discredits the aforementioned “editor” status by demonstrating us weekly’s tendency to use fanblogs as sources by saying “we saw it on just jared”. what a hypocrite!

these ppl are so slimey. good job dealing with him, brits!

Well, that's rather disillusioning. US Weekly is owned by Wenner Media, I believe. Foolishly, I tend to respect "Old Media," believing it has greater credibility & better resources, which leads to better fact-checking & etc. Apparently not. (But then again, I keep hoping for the New Yorker to do a profile of the Gyllenhaal family, so I'm probably still a victim of wild delusions.)

salailama said...

nice, there actually is an old article on maggie and jake in the new yorker, back when they were initially dubbed the it-indie siblings. i don't think it's online anymore, but you can find it on ihj i'm sure.

I think it is a lovely thing to hope for, nice anonymous. And truly within the realm of possibility. Seems to me Wenner Publications needs to do some housecleaning at US Weekly. They get A LOT wrong and have even established a certain reputation for being wrong. If it's in US Weekly, it can't be true!!!! BPB can feel secure and proud in the fact that JW is the FUTURE and US Weekly is so over. Time is on your side!

I'm surprised they didn't post the big news in August about Jake's tattoo with Britpop's name!:))

cina said...

^^ LOL!! Now wouldn't THAT have been a scoop. ;-)

Interesting. I agree 6 month party is well due.

BPB I love this thread! It is So exciting to have an insider's view on how news "happens." LOL!!!Proud od how you held your own toe to toe with the bigshot(facetiously) of US Weekly. JW Rules!!!
OT: There is somethiing sad gnawing on the back of my enfeebled brain. It is cold and rainy and dark where I am and I thought that soon, there will be no more pictures of Jake walking around in jeans and T-shirt. No beautiful naked torso shots on the beach. If we see him at all, he'll be all bundled up. And since he will be working on location, we may not see him at all. I mention this bcz last known sighting of Beautiful Jake was on October 8th. And here it is the 11th already!
BPB, please store up all the pics you can find. We will need them during the drought that's sure to come.

ever since i started stalking jake news on the net and become a quasi-fan-expert, i’ve become really disillusioned by the idea of journalist integrity when it comes to celeb news. not only is there an abundance of false news out there, misquotes and mistakes get published all the time, but no one ever bothers with retractions anymore, even when they’re proven wrong!

Smurfette, thanks for the tip on the older New Yorker piece on Maggie & Jake. (Was it in "Talk of the Town," I wonder? I'll find it soon; I have my resources.) What I want is a nice long, in-depth, thoughtful, descriptive piece, preferably written by John Lahr. Accompanied by some of those beautiful, black & white portraits that they tend to run in the New Yorker. But maybe we'll have to wait for the year when both Jake & Maggie win Academy Awards.

Maybe I'll trust Wenner Media when it comes to Rolling Stone articles, but I'm going to say that the name of US Weekly now means mud to me. Shame, since Mr. Wenner himself was definitely an advocate for "Brokeback Mountain," what with his cover story on Heath earlier this year.

I'm having a hard time letting go of my inherent respect for print media. But damn, the blogs & Web sites are more & more doing a better job these days. I mean, if JakeWatch & IHeartJake went dark for 24 hours, I'd be twisting & turning with the torments of Gyllenhaal withdrawal.

I just discovered this blog a few months back, and I have to say, I was really surprised to read this week that you’ve only been in existence for six months. I would have guessed much longer, due to how detailed and professional you are. I thoroughly enjoy reading the comments. (This is my first post) I’ve been a fan of Mr. Gyllenhaal’s work for years (1999/October Sky), but didn’t even realize how he is so universally loved until this past year. 2005 was an incredible year for him. So speaking of 2005 and T-Shirts…hehehe…if anyone needs a T-Shirt fix, try checking out one of his lesser-talked about movies: “Proof.” Maybe not the best movie overall, but Jake never disappoints. And he does look great in a T-Shirt. And let’s face it, nothing is sexier than a young, College Professor who plays the drums. ;)

Long life to this blog. It has become my regular morning, cup-of-coffee reading. Cheers.

welcome, anon—if u wish, please take on an alias so we can refer to u more easily. just hit the “other” and type in whatever you want to call yourself. no need to join blogger.

nice, i can’t recall which section it was in, but it may well have been talk of the town. it wasn’t long or in-depth at all, but was a cute interview which showed the sibling relationship a bit (maggie chides jake that there’s no irony in print when he tries to be funny with some sarcastic comment, and agreed that they both have “sad eyes”). there was no photo that i recall, but rather a cartoonish drawing of the “sad-eyed” siblings in the typical new yorker style. hope that helps.

Thanks Smurfette. I was trying to figure that out.

Yes, it was pretty damn scary when the news first came out, but now I've read more details & I can handle it better. It just appears to be a sad, unfortunate minor accident. (Not so minor to the families of the people killed, though.)

FUCK I WASN'T THE FIRST ONE to post about the HRC video.

Fuckin sucks about the helicopter hitting the building - that must of threw the city into a trauma. Fuckin A - fuckin A.

Oh and the great thing about releasing info to Brit and IHJ - THERE'S NO MONEY being earned off of it - just love! Why should anyone fucking buy US Weekly when they can get shit for free on line - Thanks for giving US Weekly the big FUCK YOU! (even if thats not what you meant - thats what I wish!)

Wasn't the rag "US Weekly" responsible for the story linking Jake and the snowboarder from the Olympics? I think they took the story off of their website when it ended up not to be true. I think they just make up stories to fill the magazine.

Anonymous said...

What nobody has even thought about is who says us weekly sent it?

It could of come from anyone who just added the name and address of someone from U.S.weekly to make it look like they sent it.It's so amatuer.

Anonymous said...

Raggy magazines like US Weekly are becoming obsolete! The internet RULES!

On another note, where have the dogs been? I think Brit and company need to investigate.

Oh, anon 9:24 - Proof was the film that finally did it for me. Completely, I mean. I had been a fan since DD and TGG, but when I saw him in Proof last year and realized what a mighty fin MAN he had become, the little resistance I had crumbled and I have been lost in his spell ever since. *sigh*

hello,
i know i'm totally off topic..but i heard some rumors about a deluxe edition of bbm out in germany (2 dvds)....do you know something about it??? are really there different features from the english version???

Anonymous said...

I have the deluxe edition - 2 DVD's in yes, a pretty three-fold lay-out, that was released in the Benelux at the end of September but I think the extras are the same as on the USA and UK edition.
The German deluxe edition is probably the same.
They are talking about a Special Edition later though.

On quite another note, people, let's please send our best wishes to Kendra who suffered convulsions yesterday and is not doing well at the moment. She will have to stop blogging for the time being. Get well soon Kendra!
