ANOTHER SECRET

In other news...

Brokeback Mountain has been declared the victor of the 'What-Film-Should-Be-Reviewed-Next' war. You have no-one to blame but yourselves if it all goes tits up. You should really have more faith though. Do you, like, totally not trust me to be respectful of the art and sincere of the sentiment?

I think the gods maybe against us too though because I went in search of a cheap copy (yeah, I didn't have it on DVD til now, stone me later) and when I entered the cheap-may-have-been-stolen-DVD shop, and I'm not kidding, a copy of October Sky (Special Edition) fell off the shelf right into my Brokeback Mountain-determined path. It was only 2.99 so I brought it. Spooky.

Also, prophecygirl is moving house this weekend so I wanted to make an artistic token of my well wishes cos I'm really nice like that. But I googled 'new home' and found this:

Brits, you should probably put a HUGE warning before the BBM review saying "to the ones that didn't vote for Brokeback and wouldn't want it reviewed by us ever, please skip this post and come back tomorrow"!
Otherwise,I just don't want to think about it.I voted for Donnie Darko because I thought taking it nice and easy would keep the vibes cool, but if this was the fate..then rock it on,ladies!

Good thinking!! I adore BBM and it changed my life in a lot of ways, so I'm a leetle wary here. Willing to wait and see what Anneka delivers, but wary none the less ... :-)

I think the best way for us to handle this is to trust that everyone here appreciates Brokeback and it is known that it's a beautiful piece of art. And we do know that it is the favourite of most of us and it changed so many things.
Knowing all this,it's much easier to laugh at a review, because you know that the persons involved appreciate its value. It should be fine.

Britpop and Co:

You guys really do have an AMAZING sense of humor - I'm sure you'll do my favorite movie of late justice! ;-)

Dude, moving? Just down the street! The PG charm will still be in full effect...you can't rid of it that easily. :D

Oh my God, because Blogger is so stupid sometimes, I just now saw my llama!!! Thanks, brits!! Best house-warming gift EVER! Except now I'm not moving until next weekend. I know, I'm confusing everyone. It wasn't my fault. I just found out they didn't have the place ready. :( However, I did spend several hours yesterday hauling things down from the attic and found it difficult to move this morning. I had to change shirts and everything. It was disgusting. So I've half-moved. Next weekend will probably be a breeze because of the lack of stairs and addition of air-conditioning.

Yeah, Simon your comment makes so much more sense now. I thought you were just being psychic or something. If you were around, I'd definitely put you to work. ;)

I think that card goes for all of us here, sadly. He wouldn't pay any attention, but we'd still be beside ourselves with joy from just seeing him IRL. And sadly, not even that will ever happen for most of us... Damn, what a downer when you think of it. Thank God we have each other! *sobs* LOL!

And good luck with the move, PG!

I don,t think you either ride or walk llamas, but they do spit.

I call this "the summer of Brokeback" because I have not been able to get myself from under the spell of this movie all summer. I thought I was alone in feeling this movie changed me. Some of your comments make me feel I am not alone in this. I read the story a while ago and was so in awe I had to buy the book it was in and read it again. When the movie came out I thought it was a parody or something and did not go to see it in the theater because there were so many sneid remarks and much bad mouthing. I did buy the DVD however, to see what the fuss was all about, now I can't get it out of my soul. I had to tell myself over and over that this was only a story and these were not real people here in this film in order to stop the pain of it. Maybe being able to look at it through Anneka's humor will help me put it into better perspective.

Yes I love Bubble Boy. We need more movies where Jake lives happily ever after. I think he makes it through Zodiak alive. Please tell me I am right in this.

I don't think it is the lack of a happy ending in Brokeback that crushes me, but the fact that it is an ending without hope or closure.

Brokeback has left an indelible mark on my soul. It was/is a wrenching experience. Having said that, I have to go back to the appearance on Oprah, was it? When Heath and Jake were having some light moments with the whole "Jack Nasty" thing, and I was able to laugh.I think we'll be just fine. I know that most of us cherish and respect the work of everyone involved. Now...let the game begin!

mpom -- I, and everyone here I'm sure, know exactly where you are coming from. But I do prefer to think there is a glimmer of hope at the end of BBM. Ennis is going to Alma Jr's wedding. It's a small thing, maybe -- but a HUGE step for Ennis, and it is a direct result of his loss of Jack and the realization of how much Jack loved him -- and he loved Jack. Just my 2 cents.

Mpom, your right BBM is a painful story and it has affected many people, but life is like that sometimes. It opened my eyes to the far-reaching effects of decisions that we make, even if we don’t realise it at the time there are always consequences and a price to be paid.

I can only speak of my experience, and whilst BBM caused a lot of pain and regret, it was worth it because it forced me to deal with some issues from long ago. Issues that I thought were over, but without my realising it they had a totally negative effect on me.

BBM inspired me to change that and I will always be grateful. If I had never seen this story then maybe I would not have had the opportunity to be the person I am today, and I think that would have been a lot more painful than having to deal with the reality that was my BBM.

You are all so lovely to share this way out here in cyberspace. Since I saw BBM rather late I did not find this site or any other place to vent my sadness with anyone. I am rather new here.

I too refer to that passage "If you can't fix it you have to stand it." Seems to fit often these days in my life. Another is using a memory or dream to "Stoke the day." I think of a beautiful scene from the movie or a favorite photograph of my favorite actor, Jake, to do just that, "stoke the day" and it works. Makes the day go smoother somehow.

Hi mpom, perhaps you might like to try the Dave Cullen site dedicated to BBM, if you haven't tried it before that is. There will be many there who are happy to talk abut various aspect of the film, especially in the thread "How Brokeback affected me" if you feel like a place to talk about your feeling of sadness.

You're moving next weekend? Well I'm afraid I can't stretch to another llama.

Dude, I'm totally taking this llama with me. He's packed up in the garage with the rest of the stuff from the attic.

I was ALSO just about to recommend that all of you who have been touched by BBM do come on over to the Dave Cullen Forum which is 'everything Brokeback'. Join in any of the wonderful conversations and in particular, I recommend joining as a member and accessing The Juicy Bits, where you will find an absolute wealth of fanfiction - stories written by extremely talented authors where they (we) find closure, healing, redemption etc - stories that take you down all those other roads that Jack and Ennis might have walked ... if if if and so on!

See you there!

You could send a lemur next week. It's kinda like a llama. And more pocket-sized.

Of course, most people just send a card.

Brokeback meant a great deal to me because my dad and one of my older brothers hadn't fully accepted my sexuality or my boyfriend and my other brother convinced them to go with us to see Brokeback together. Afterwards, it opened up this huge talk especially between my dad and me. There were even tears and hugs which my dad definitely doesn't open himself up to often. So the movie changed a lot for me. My dad and brother still have some reservations but at least now they're trying and they've really made a huge effort to welcome my boyfriend better into the family.

O Michael, we do all have such a long way to go, don't we? One of the things that BBM did for me was to help me realize that we, none of us, has the right to judge the way any one human being loves another. I can only really speak for myself, and I do not know enough about it to judge anyone. Keep in mind that your father obviously loves you very much and wants the best for you. This story brought us all a little closer to human perfection, your father and brothers included. From now on it will be up to you to help them go further. Love, patience and understanding will be needed in great quantities.
Thank you for sharing your story.
May you live in love always.
