WELL I'LL BE DAMNED. JAKE IS IN FRANCE!

Look at this exciting postcard that just came general delivery to the Jake Watch Top Secret Mailbox! Seems like Jake hasn't forgotten about us after all. Think there's any chance of Jack Twist/Jack Sparrow photo op? A girl can dream... At least we have the real story now; if you want to know what the "actual media" is saying, click here (thank you, heddaparsons). For those of you who don't feel like clicking, the postcard reads:

"Friends, this letter is long overdue. I'm in France to recruit more Jake Watch agents. I rode up the mountain on the front of this card with Lance and I kicked his ass. I'm going to come back with really amazing leg muscles. Will write more when I have time. Hoping to catch up with Depp while I'm here. - Jake xoxo"

UPDATE: Hear Jake talking with his voice. It's an mp3 so you can put it on your iPod and listen to his voice every night before you go to bed. Not that I'm planning on doing that or anything...

What the hell Jake!! Get your scrawny ass over to Sweden now that you're in Europe for Christ's sake! It's not that far, plus I have a bed here that you can use... free of charge. Ehrm.

Can I just say, regarding that 'other queer from brokeback' comment, it seems rather shocking that this is how Jake and Heath are known by what appear to be industry insiders. No wonder Jake's PR machine, as nice anon and others have commented, is into overdrive to make him look all sporty and appeal to male audiences.

OMG, Jake riding on L'Alp d'Huez! OMG, I have been there I know what those mountains are like and can I say I am impressed he dares riding up there with Lance! VERY impressed...

Holy mother of God, I don't think I would be able to recover for a LONG time if I were to lay eyes on such a photo!

Now Jake move your ass a little more towards south, to Catalonia land where a glam agent waits for you sweating incessantly.

Haha oh PG--I mean Jakey, of course--that postcard is wonderful.

Dude, that postcard is TOTALLY legit. You don't even need postage for mail to get into the Jake Watch Secret Mailbox, 'cause that's how awesome this operation is. ;)

I agree with you all. Jake and Johnny standing together for a photo-op ... words just fail me.

Anonymous said...

zoo, I agree with you but I think it's even more true for jake than heath. and it's really ridiculous. that man's publicist needs to get some kinda better grip on things.
meanwhile...send me a postcard, jacob! ;)

Anonymous said...

No! Jake get your (muscle, lol) as over Vancouver!! Come to Canada!! :D

Anonymous said...

Something about all this stuff with Lance just doesn't feel right to me.

Do we really feel like it's Jake's publicist pushing him into doing all this crap? Does Jake really need all that publicity--I mean the guy wins all these polls for sexist man of the month or whatever the heck. He's also (ahem!) a tremendously gifted and lauded actor.

So, what would be wrong with letting him just have a life a bit less in the spotlight, perhaps working on choosing new roles or perhaps spending time with someone extra special??

I agree with Dani and I just hope this madness stops. Now, if he is truly having fun and is keeping his head on straight I'm happy for him, but he's so young and some of these interactions have turned against him of late.

Anonymous said...

Dani:

What has turned sour? What makes you think he is being pushed to create an image? Isn't it possible that he's having a great time hanging out with an idol doing healthy recreational things? I want to go to France and hang out with people I admire. I'm not sure what you guys are specifically referring to at times. Would you prefer that he be in LA with Lohan and a head full of coke? Or drop off the map entirely (maybe that would be good for him...who knows...)? I'm not seeing the inherent dangers or red flags that some of you guys are picking up on. 'Splain to me, please! :)

ilovelost, I totally agree with you. I don't see the problem here. Jake seems to love to ride and now has an amazing experience of being around the Tour de France and biking in the French Alps with Lance Armstrong. I don't see that as a publicity stunt. He has already showed he likes sports so I don't think his PR forced him to go this far. Yes, he has been the butt of too many jokes and I hope that stops. And I really hope we hear about him signing onto some new movies very soon. However, I don't see the problem with him doing someting exciting and healthy like biking in France with Lance. It is a lot better than him being with Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan doing shallow shit.

Anonymous said...

"Now he's being pushed into creating an image that will appeal to a mass audience"

He's a grown man and can say no if he wants to.. Just a thought.

Becky Heineke said...

PG? do we have any agents in france anymore?...is Fifi still available?

There seems to be a lack of French agents at the moment. I'm beginning to suspect Fifi was kidnapped, probably by the nefarious media which tries so hard to foil our plans. But I have every confidence that Jake will be successful in his recruitment mission.

Anonymous said...

Lovelost, totally agree with you. Don't see any publicity stunt here. I personnally am very happy for Jake he gets to go riding L'Alp Huez with Lance Armstrong. Other that the silly joke at the ESPY which was obvioulsy scripted I only heard good things being said by Armstrong regarding Jake. That Jake can even climb those mountains with Lance is rather amazing, what publicity stunt? You either can go up there on a bike or you can't, most movie stars sure cant and would go up there ... with an helicopter, if at all!

Anonymous said...

I agree with ilovelost.
PR,publicist,blah blah blah....
Sooooooooooooooooo boring.

Anonymous said...

Oh and one more thing I think it is great his PR is not pushing him into finding new roles and getting into a movie to ride the popularity wave, or hanging around with some starlette to give speculations a rest. Instead, they let him have fun and do things for himself.

I think a lot of people have gotten way too over-protective of Jake. He's 25 years old and can make his own decisions about how and with whom he spends his free time.

I think it's more than a little sad that so many of us Jake fans have taken to hating Lance without even bothering to learn anything about him. If you had, you'd know he's actually very liberal, honest, and he's known for being a fiercely loyal friend. link

I think it's also sad that so many think of Jake as unwilling or incapable of standing up for himself. That doesn't show that you care about him, it's actually an insult to him--as if he doesn't have a mind of his own. I know that I have more confidence in him than that. I can't understand why others have taken to thinking of him as a weak doormat. :/

"I was simply expressing a distaste for the way the publicity machine works. Sometimes it is very exploitive and I wish Jake didn't have to be subjected to any of it."

But it's his choice what he takes part in. He makes those choices so he's not really being unknowingly subjected to it, which is what it sounds like you're saying.

I agree with anon above that many people here have become too over protective and consequently have lost sight of the big picture. I know it's well meaning, but some people have become very clouded in their thinking. For instance, with the ESPY awards everyone seemed to think Jake was a victim, the butt of someone's awful jokes. Not many people stopped to think that he agreed to appear and that he knew what was going to be said, which he did. I have to assume he even found it funny considering that he agreed to the jokes.

It's as though when he does something one likes it's all Jake. Jake doing his own thing, how great he is. However, when he's involved in something one doesn't like, somehow it wasn't really his choice, he's a victim of the machine, he's being pushed around and so forth. He simply can't be this great independent thinker making good choices for himself and his career one minute, and then the next be a puppy on a leash being led into hidden potholes. We can't have it both ways and pick and choose depending on the circumstances, it is what it is.

Unfortunately, this way of thinking is becoming really prevalent on here. I personally find it offputting, well meaning as it may be.

Anonymous said...

Not that anyone asked me, but to throw in my own two cents on this...I don't care if Jake hangs out with Lance or not. He can pick his own friends. I know he's a grown man and has a very capable brain of his own. I also agree that it's great that he does what he wants and doesn't appear to let himself be swayed by other peoples' opinions. But, and I don't think this is overprotective of me, at some point you have to draw some kind of line. If a "joke" (in this case a recurring one) keeps growing and is getting out of hand, sometimes you have to stand up for yourself and say something. Do I have any suggestions for this? No! Is it probably easier said than done? Absolutely! But it's just my very humble, insignificant, non-argumentative opinion. :)

I agree. I don't think he should have took part in the ESPY awards and those jokes. I think it was a bad judgement call on Jake's part.

I'm not a fan of the publicity or tabloid scene either. I understand that, believe me. That's why I refuse to financially support the paps by buying the magazines and watching those entertainment shows, et al. In fact, I've never even heard of a show called Daily 10 until I read it in your comment. (And as an aside, does anyone really put any stock into anything that's said on those kind of Entertainment Tonight-type of shows? C'mon.) However, I feel like that is a seperate feeling from those who are upset that Jake is even hanging out with Lance. And it's different from being mad about the ESPY jokes.

I think you (general "you") have to ask yourself what is really the issue to you. Is it that Jake has new friends and you don't approve of them? Is it that the pap machine has gotten out of control and you feel Jake deserves his privacy? Is it that you don't like it being insinuated that he's attracted to men? For example, if the Daily 10 show's choices (instead of the two guys and Will Ferrell) were Carmen Electra, Ashley Judd, and Natalie & Jake should have made his move on Carmen but he would have had to fight off Shawn whatever his name is... would you still be upset that Jake's name is being used? Or would you just think, 'Oh whatever, how lame'?

Personally, I don't think it's a big deal to have cheesy polls like that or even read cheesy jokes from an awards show script. The easier it is for the general public to talk about it, even if in little ways like "Eyes up here, Jake!", it makes it easier for people to accept that gay people are just people. They don't have cooties and it's just no big deal. Right? I think the approach that people like Jake and Anderson Cooper take (not really confirming or denying and accepting whatever people want to think of them) is a good and courageous one.

As for the other two things I mentioned, hating the pap machine and his new friends: 1) Don't support the paps by buying their magazines or giving those dumb tabloid shows good ratings. The public created that monster by supporting those things, and we can kill it by not feeding it.

And like I said, Lance is known for being liberal and a giving & loyal friend... that's the kind of person I'd think we'd all want him to have on his side. After all, he didn't have to give Jake a head's up on the script and he didn't have to invite Jake into his inner circle and he didn't have to take him to France & guide him up L'Alpe'd'Huez. I think Jake is in good hands. :)

While I'm sure there are nasty little vultures who would sabotage their own mothers to get ahead, and feel they must do it at someone else's expense, I really don't think most credible
"industry insiders" view either Jake or Heath as anything but accomplished, bankable actors. This negative stuff isn't as widespread as some folk would like us to believe. I have a view, that there are elements, that are political in nature, that are trying to keep this thing going, and there is a tabloid press out here that happily buys into it bcz they make a buck off of anything they think of as salacious. Am I suggesting a "vast right wing conspiracy" ? Well, actually, in part, yes I am. And please don't forget. Jake is a political activist as his entire family is.
He was prominently featured in the last presidential campaign. Heath has been publically critical of the War in Iraq and in fact led a demonstration, along with Naomi Watts in Australia, called their Prime Minister a "dick." and he doesn't think much of our current president. He's quieted down quite a bit, but his views haven't changed. I guess I'm saying that both Jake and Heath have very liberal political views and aren't afraid to express them. Their willingness to be in the film and then to support it and to support those human rights issues it raised is really a courageous and remarkable thing. But there are costs. And those costs include the harassment, ridicule and crap they catch from time to time. The lunatic fringe out there on the extreme right is mentally incompetent and they don't understand that, hey! These guys are ACTORS. It was a MOVIE. I think the paps are hired guns trying for a money shot. The one that says "Gotcha." I admire Jake and Heath tremendously. I think both of them are the epitome of grace under pressure. Now, I wish Jake's PR people would get off their duffs and develop a strategy he can agree with and move forward. GAWD. Sorry for being so long winded. All of this is just my VHO.

First time I post but I love this blog. And sorry for my crappy english.

Finally!! He gets out of that eagles' nest that is the great Hollywood..I've always thought that one of the best ways for him to keep his character as it is, and not to get stained by all that misery surrounding him in the business is to travel. To see other people, to hear other people's beliefs, to enlarge his cultural views..and Europe is a great way to start..not to mention France..the country where the bohemian revolution first appeared..
No matter how much his PR is involved in his hanging out with Lance Armstrong, it is a positive thing. It is well known that sports have a strong effect not only on the human body, but also on the spirit..They have this feature of giving you energy and very good mood, that I think are vital for Jake. And the Alps..can do nothing but good to you (if you're not too adventurous :)

speaking from france ...
I am so astonished that Jake is in France. I, too, should have watched the Tour de France daily specials on tv !
some explanations:
- l'Alpe d'Huez is the Tour de France's peak : the most difficult event that can be, especially in that heat.
- true, we don't like Lance Amstrong in France. He's been so rude to French people, constant bashing!
greg Lemond, another american Tour winner was very loved here. But Amstrong took the Tour to another dimension : the speed was so suspicious plus the drug use evidences turned down that beautiful sport event. I guess that's the reason Amstrong is nothing but popular in France, and especially for his 2005 statement : "i'll make another tour just to piss off the French".
that's just stupid . Just like the jokes he made on the ESpy whatever.
The relations between our two countries are bad enough, i don't see the point of inflaming it.

Sooo, i' m glad Jake's in france but i'm kinda disappointed he hangs around with Lance Amstrong, in that weird "oh no there's no drug use in cycling and oh yes the most important is that an american fellow wins" context...

and sorry about my writing, english is not my native blablabla..

this being said, i'll make sure to pay attention to any gorgeous legs walking on national territory (though i live very far from the Alps) and report it to you tout de suite !

I am watching Tour de France on Eurosport tv and they have told about that Lance has come to France on Monday and will stay to the end. They told about controversial relationship with French and this "Welcome Asshole" title in French press. Lance is supposed to watch the Tour from the car so perhaps Jake is with him ...it would be great because the mountains are crazy beautiful.
No one word about Jake but they told about "crude jokes on ESPYS" and article about that in New York Times. I think that Jake will have great time there, French are always like that ;)..just enjoy the belle France!

I guess what I really want is for Jake not to turn into a commodity or objectified into a jock or something. Doing these things with Lance are fun I'm sure and no doubt very exciting, I just fear that he's getting away from his roots. Especially with all the publicity following him around. I could be TOTALLY wrong. But, I'd RATHER see him get publicity for his terrific, edgy performance in a stage production, or something. He can do what he wants, no doubt. I'm sure he's still a great guy always, but maybe not as much the guy that I want to follow or be infatuated with.

Anonymous said...

I just saw the advertisement on french tv for the BBM DVD. I hope it's a sign I will see Jake. Lance was interviewed from his car a few minutes ago but there was no image. So I don't know who is in the car with him. Wait and see I guess.

Anonymous said...

ON THE OTHER HAND :-)

I really do admire someone who goes after his dreams. It's to Jake's tremendous credit that he was able to get Lance's attention in this way (due to his drive and force of personality, I'm sure) and realize this exciting adventure with someone who is a 'hero' of his.

(I do think my negativity is partly a result of the 'sting' of Lance's joke that is still with me, and which caused me to lose respect for the guy. The fact that Jakey is hanging with him makes me feel conflicted, no doubt, as a result. And YES, I plead guilty to being overprotective LOL!)

I wouldn't presume ot offer an opinion on who Jake hangs out with. But since I'm a bit older...(erhm) I was just thinking...how cool is it for a 25 year old to be able to go to the Tour de France with Lance Armstrong and accompany him thru the French Alps on a bike! "Amazing" doesn't even begin to describe it. The ESPYs are history. If anything, in retrospect, they only call attention to Lance's boorish behavior. Lance is a piece of work. TO talk about the French the way he has and then show up like that. Tell ya what... if I were Lance Armstrong, I wouldn't be eating or drinking in any French hotels. LOL!

here is a radio interview with Jake and Lance from France! Jake sounds great and seems really excited to be there and to have biked up the Alp.

As a working girl, I'm really envying Jake as he enjoys myself in France. He's between projects, & he's got the money & the leisure in which to pursue any of his sudden whims or near-obsessive enthusiasms just as far as he wants to take them. Also, Jake has wide-ranging connections that enable him to meet famous people who are outstanding in their various fields. [Remember what Cantara said about Stephen Gyllenhaal almost reflexively attaching a big name to any endeavor he's involved with? Maybe Jake does that, too.) And Jake's got the charm & the grace & the sense of humor to make these people like him. So if Jake's into cooking, then he hangs out with Mario Batali & a talented sous chef & learns how to make meals that could be served in a three-star restaurant. If Jake's suddenly into cycling, he become friends with & gets coached by Lance Armstrong, then watches the Tour de France with Armstrong from the VIP section, as it were.

I really think that Jake's just being driven by his nature & his habits & upbringing. And his PR people are delighted to work with the sporty Jake image, which furthers their plans for raising "Jake awareness" on all four audience quadrants.

Oh, the Discovery Channel? Really? Then that adds another factor to the mix.

Hope Jake is careful out there in the beautiful mountains of France - Europe is having incredibly hot weather - I cannot imagine anyone biking up a mountain under these circumstances FOR FUN!!
Have to admire the guy.
With regard to everything that as been discussed above, I'm sure Jake knows what he is doing.
(And I hope the French chefs serve him lots of delicious food..!)
Have fun Jake.
