QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"I like to disappoint! My dad said to me once that the job of an artist, or anybody really, is to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed. So sometimes my excuse if it's bad is that I am disturbing the comfortable."
Jake Gyllenhaal, just one big old disappointment.

How postmodern of you! How ironic! I hope you don't apply this 'disturbing the comfortable' sentiment to every aspect of your life, Jake, like your bed or your shoes.

WEll he did just that for me anyways by making Bubble Boy!
Good job, kiddo!

But it's SO true.. It's important not to be perfect. Artists who succeed only, are soon to be out of the race. An artist can't depend on their "success rate". As long as Jake is still in the business, I'm happy. It's always risky business to try things that haven't been done before (the typical Jake/Maggie G choice of movies), but that will last in the long run. Keep it up Jake! And Maggie...

God, he's so deep.

Its good to mix things up and try something new! Some peeps in Hollwood are scraced to try something different, not this guy!

Gyllenpapa is paraphrasing Finley Peter Dunne, and changing one of the verbs: "The job of the newspaper is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable."

yeah, and i think its better to do a really good low budget movie than some blockbuster that everyone forgets when the next shit comes along. Both Jake and Maggie are so young and have few of the best movies ever behind them... anyone thinks they should do another movie 2gether like in donnie darko?

Anonymous said...

doesn't he talk some utter bollocks sometimes?

Anna said...

LOL! He talks A LOT, and it's only natural that some of the things he says are less meaningful... ;)

What really matters: the quality of the movies not the quantity ...

Keep going.

I think one of the sweetest and most endearing things about Jake is his ability to occasionally spout complete and utter piffle. It reminds me that he's human.

"anyone thinks they should do another movie 2gether like in donnie darko?"

Absolutely they should do another movie together and play brother and sister...it would be great

Anonymous said...

Well, I'm disturbed and I find him comforting...so, you go Jake!! You just keep on keepin' on!! ;)

Nothing Really Matters said...

They should definitely do another movie together it would be really good.

Oh yeah! I'd love to see them in another movie together!

gin made me smile. Also, I'm going to find a use for the phrase "utter piffle" at my first opportunity. Sounds just so ... so British. Thanks Anon 12:35

haha, believe me, we don't go round saying piffle! Well the queen might but she's just common!

Miffed67 said...

And let's face it; most artists - including writers, actors, painters whatever - are not often "comfortable" and rarely close to being normal.

What constitutes "normal" anyway? And who gets to decide?

Nobody's asking him to be anything other than completely human, with all the frailties that encompasses. I, personally, think that is the greatest accomplishment one can aspire to.

And yes, I have a certification in Pompous Ass, thankyouverymuch!

I say piffle and ruddy and, of course, bollocks!

I don't know about you guys, but I think is Mama (and Dad of course) raised him right! A lot of the things he says and his beliefs are just so true, in my opinion anyway. ;-)

I say bulloks too! Great cause it aint a cuss over here and I can say it in front of my class!

Anonymous said...

Ahh, well that explains Highway.

Anonymous said...

Hmm. I liked Highway. That movie had so many drugs in it I felt high by the end. ;) There are movies he's been in that I haven't seen yet, like Proof and Lovely & Amazing, but the only movie I WON'T see is Bubble Boy. But that's not Jake's fault. :D
I wouldn't see that whoever was in it.
I do love it so when Jakey rambles. It's beyond cute. Sometimes he talks in circles and those are some of my favorite things to read. :)

I LOVE Highway but I loathe BubbleBoy.

Anonymous said...

He's such a wise head on young shoulders. *sighs*

~GASP~

gin, you MUST watch Bubble Boy - its so funny, well my kind of humour but he's so sweet in it. You're missing out on a great acting performance and if you want to know your true love in life, you must see him warts and all!

Anonymous said...

I havent seen Bubble Boy, Proof , Highway and Lovely and amazing... Which of those is the best movie? And where is he the hottest :-)
Actually, i didnt even know about H, L&A and BB before I started "checking him out"... Anyway ppl say bubble boy is dumb, but then again i could watch a movie called "2 h observing Jake sleeping" so...

Anonymous said...

No problem squallcloud - I think 'piffle' is a great word, as is 'bollocks'. 'Drat' and 'poppycock' are also pretty good, but not as good as the others. Love from Anon 12.35

How can you not love jimmy livingston the bubble boy???

It really isn't as dumb as peeps make out! Ok scratch that; it is, but jake is so charming and so likeable in the lead, seriously your gyllenviewing is not complete without BB. Give it a try, I enjoyed it even more than highway!

Lovely and amazing ain't all that bad either, he and catherine keener are very sweet together and i love when he gets her arrested for 'raping' him.

OK, Ill watch bubble boy, there must be sth about that movie since ppl either love it or hate it:-)

Anonymous said...

WOW, gin and I might just be the same person.

Anonymous said...

Leah - You just HAVE to watch Proof too. Not that it's a very good movie, I find it kinda boring every time Jake is not in a scene, but OMG THE HOTNESS!!! I promise you Leah, Jake will literally have you gasping for air with they way he looks in this movie. He's an absolute dream in it!

Anonymous said...

^^ You see?!? I get so worked up just writing about how hot he is in Proof, I can't even get it right... "...with THE way he looks in this movie" was what I was trying to say....

I'll try to get a grip now.

Well, he's not much of a mathematician from what I've heard! He studied Eastern Religion at Columbia University in NY for 2 years. That's about all i know.

Anonymous said...

Two semesters, or two years?

Miffed67 said...

^^ Two years, he attended Columbia and majored in Eastern Religion. I think he did it to get Gyllendaddy off his back!

britpopbaby said...

^ You think? I wondered why he didn't stick it out. I reckoned cos Hollywood was beckoning...

Miffed67 said...

^^ Yeah, that's what I think, too, britpop. Acting bug bit him!
